    This is old stuff being reinvented with new jargon or "newspeak". Ive been in image processing related technologies for over 40 years and the answer to your first para is yes. Look at the technologies behind GIS and satellite mapping, radar mapping and urban planning. Segmentation and "disentanglement"( hey this aint QED! ) are related leading to independence of entities and attributes.
