  1. I guess working in Netradiant Custom is viable, but you have to open a Quake 4 map that already has single player entities in it.

If you open it fresh, there is a bare definition file it must have internally that doesn't seem to load a full entity list, not even guns.

But if you open a map populated with the proper entities, NRC figures out that it needs those, loads them properly and allows you to drop in stuff like those weapons which previously were gone in the right-click menu list

There doesn't seem to be any way other than this to convince NRC to use proper defs

More puzzlingly, this is a per-session thing. If you start out with a blank slate with an incorrect entity catalogue loaded, if you open an existing map, it does not pull the new list. You have to set NRC to reload the last map on startup, close out and then restart NRC with the proper map.

  6. Hooray, first Quake 4 map! Finally summoned the energy to compile a months-old test map.

When you're starting out with something new, this is often what it looks like: an empty room with a few walls just so you understand the steps necessary to be able to stand in a map of your own making.

  7. This brought back so many memories. #Quake3 and #UT99 were a huge part of my life back then, genuinely good times.

Now #gameplay footage from #Quake4: The Awakening has surfaced on #YouTube, an expansion that was cancelled after only ten months of development. The footage shows early environments, experimental mechanics and content that was clearly never finished.

Mostly documentary value, but still a fascinating look at what could have been.
Apparently some elements like the Dead Zone #multiplayer mode actually made it into the 1.3 update back then.

    Bittersweet to watch.

  14. Despite being The Only Guy Who Can Save The Day, there's indications that you are not, in fact, the Main Character in Quake 4. This fucker will, with a starter machine gun, insta-delete Strogg around him; something that takes you getting a boosted railgun to do over halfway through the game.

They could've pod-dropped this asshole anywhere on the planet with several crates of ammo, and the war would be over in a week.

He is so bored being there, too, like his only entertainment is betting on if his squad mates live or die, that's the highlight of his tour of duty.

  21. Being around FOSS a while sometimes you don't realize how formative certain games are, like I think mentally because I was around when Linux had nowhere near the spread it does now, being the kid who played Tux Racer feels like a very personal, almost private experience. Who played that?

But then you run across people who say, "Oh, OpenArena was a huge part of my youth, I'd play it all the time after school" and it hits you how important these games are, especially with economies being what they are today. Even dropping ten bucks on an older title like Quake 3 might be prohibitive.

FOSS games and especially FOSS spinoffs of games are even more important now with a growing awareness of the monstrous behaviour of game studios and publishers. I'm super into Quake 4 right now, but can I really ask people who didn't buy it on launch in 2005 to throw money at Bethesda today? I can't.

And that makes me sad. It feels like there's a piece of history being lost here, like I don't expect Quake 4 to have some renaissance on the level of Quake 1, but it does feel like the clock is ticking because it was never open-sourced.

A friend joked we could name a FOSS spinoff "OpenStrogg", heh.

  22. Been playing more Quake 4 lately for inspo, and am sad I slept on the game's multiplayer.

It's amazing what mappers created with a tweaked Doom 3 engine, like I feel like some might have passed on the game because of the perception it was still a grimy corridor shooter engine, but it's got range!

  23. I dunno how these guys do it, bouncing their way through these maps at, like, half the speed of light.

For how long I've played Quake games, I feel like I should be better at this.

  24. Quake 4 released today in 2005, there's still a few multiplayer servers up worth hopping into if you want to see what Quake 3 would have been like in the Doom 3 engine, and with crouch-sliding.

I see the most activity in Q4 High Table USA

I wrote a Quake 4 review on Cohost that I'm looking to re-upload elsewhere, the tl;dr was essentially "Quake 4 is okay for a Quake game."

There were a lot of cool ideas being played with that I feel were held back by the pressures of expected mid-2000s mechanics. I see it as a gamedev time capsule.

This game has a slow start, but really shines when it gets away from thinking it's a grittier, more gory Halo. The gunplay is solid throughout, and single-player Strogg-stomping is best done alone (or with a co-op friend, which unfortunately Quake 4 lacks).

    I really wish Q4 was open-sourced. :(

  30. Has anyone ever seen #Doom3 and #Quake4 in the same room at the same time?

  31. Awhile back (about 2 years ago IIRC) I picked up a used physical copy of #Quake4 for PC. I was originally thinking of playing it on my WinXP rig (hence why I opted for physical) but today I decided to set it up on the main desktop instead. #Debian's `game-data-packager` was able to auto-build a set of .debs from the original CDs and the last official patch and the game runs with no issues.

This was floating around QuakeCon a while back, and I like to keep it circulating this time of year.

Quake is on a Steam sale right now; picking it up and downloading TrenchBroom is a great way to get into level design!
