Despite their releasing six albums in the early 70s, I suspect you aren't familiar with the #FamleyGuitarBand. This is partly because their albums only ever saw release on #Quadraphonic #8Track - as well as on the even more obscure 7 ½ ips #ReelToReel format. Famley Guitar Band were a studio-only group that gave us loungy, guitar led instrumental versions of the hits of their day, and were surprisingly good at it - their winsome version of #DannyOKeefe's "Goodtime Charlie's Got the Blues" gets me every time.

Quad 8-tracks are a trip: since the format required twice the tape to create the surround-sound effect, it cut the available play time on a tape in half. You'd only be able to hear the full effect on special quad players, as playback on normal 8-track players resulted in hearing just half (i.e. 2 channels) of the music.

#dolbyAtmos is cool n' all but, I don't think it's appropriate for music

This upcoming piece of recording gear can do 7.1.4. I guess people gotta mix for movies!

For #music what I think would be ideal: 7.4.4
As in:
4 "ear level", your typical floor standing speakers. Each w/ a subwoofer, mid woofer, tweeter.

3 ctr spkrs for only vocals. Vocals can/should also be in the front 2 or 4 speakers. Especially gang vocals

The rear 4 should be for certain extra instruments or effects etc especially.

BTW last ".4" is for 4 spkrs in ceiling corners

In one week (September 21), I will be performing #quadraphonic music at Grand Avenue Temple in Kansas City, Missouri.

Also performing will be Cybersyn Quartet, Rev. Dwight Frizzell, and Austin Williamson.

I did a #Quadraphonic rework of "00045 forgive" by dvdv, then encoded it with #QUARK so you can play it in stereo as-is or in quadraphonic using a hardware decoder, the free QUARK plugin on your computer, or a home theater receiver with Dolby Pro Logic II.

The video linked below includes the encoded stereo track and a 5.1 surround mix. YouTube will play the audio in either stereo or full surround, according to the capabilities of the device you watch it on.

@CrowsLabyrinth That is very disappointing and frustrating (though, sadly, not terribly surprising).

I still want to explore translating my #quadraphonic music to #DolbyAtmos, but these details have certainly deflated my motivation.

Per @macrumors, #AppleMusic will pay artists up to 10% more in royalties for #SpatialAudio content.

I notice quite the outbreak of surround sound enabled videos on oo-tube. Seems a bit late in the day for all that 5.1, 7.1 palava. Thought it was all Atmos or spatial audio now. All my life, somewhere, somebody was convinced that surround sound was the next big thing. Christ even #TheArchers went out in #Quadraphonic for the 3 people that could recieve it back in 1977 (presumably wiped). #SurroundSound #audio #youtube

@atomicpoet The guy i was talking bout set up a quad listening room and has a #quadraphonic copy (on tape) of "Dark side of the moon" .. they did a listening party a few weeks ago, but i didn't have time to go.. but we're doing it again in a few weeks.

@atomicpoet me and the guy who owns the studio i goof round were just talking about the idea of producing #quadraphonic mixes of some projects we've work on on 30 ips tape. but i am just looking into how much interest there would be. he's working out the technical details

Meanwhile, I have experimented with #QUARK (Quadraphonic Universally Accessible Resource Kit - https://quark.cykik.com/), which uses Regular Matrix encoding to "fold down" #quadraphonic music into a stereo file. You can listen to the stereo file as-is or use any Regular Matrix decoder (like QUARK or an old skool hardware decoder) to hear it in quad again. The math used by Dolby ProLogic II is close enough to also work.

@sergio_101 I am still exploring how to deliver my #quadraphonic music.

The simplest method is to provide 4 channel WAV or FLAC files. That's easiest for me, but puts the burden on the listener to be able to play those files. That's probably not a big deal for those who are quad/surround music enthusiasts, but it seems like that may be a very niche market.

@remst8 i would love to hear more about your approach to delivering #quadraphonic recordings, and the availability of your work in quadraphonic mixes.

I’m a mild-mannered engineering type by day, and I dabble in drone ambient #music and #fieldrecording when spare time and motivation allow.

My music endeavors have been an on-again/off-again hobby of playing with #tracker programs since the early '90s with an Amiga 500. My current DAW of choice is #Renoise.

Lately, I have been working on #quadraphonic music and #ambisonic field recordings.
