"A Business Insider analysis of US data center permits reveals a staggering escalation in data center power use. Data centers across the US are growing in number and in size. If all data centers permitted through 2025 come online, they will use between 224.3 terawatt-hours and 358.8 terawatt-hours of electricity annually, an increase of 50% over the previous year across the range, Business Insider's analysis found.

"At the midpoint, that's more than all the #electricity used by any one US state in 2024, except Texas.

"The vast majority of this power use is driven by #hyperscale data centers, mammoth facilities that use 40 megawatts or more each, Business Insider estimates.

"#TechGiants have an insatiable appetite for more computing power to fund their AI ambitions. In 2025, permits were issued for 176 new data centers across 34 states — the most new permits in one year since the first was issued in 1976, Business Insider found. Many of them are mammoth facilities destined for rural areas — enormous complexes blanketing #prairies, #GreenSpaces, and #farmland.

"#AmazonCorp's planned 14-building data center complex in #RidgelandMS, would transform nearly 800 acres of rural #woodland. In the village of #MountPleasantWI, Microsoft's nine data center buildings would command a collective footprint of over 5.2 million square feet built on a property nearly the size of New York City's Central Park, according to planning documents. And just outside #EagleMountainOT, #QTS — one of the nation's biggest data center operators — is building one that is expected to demand between 1.9 and 3 terawatt-hours a year once fully online, according to Business Insider's estimate. On average, that's the same amount of electricity used by 227,000 US homes.

"The race by tech companies to reach ever-greater AI ambitions has sparked a sweeping backlash from local residents and state and local officials wary of #Datacenter impacts on the #environment, economy, and #communities. And development-friendly lawmakers could face a reckoning in this year's #midterms, in which data centers are emerging as a key issue for many voters."

Jeff and Karl managed to have a fruitful conversation with a packed room. Lots of people contributed facts.

Having attended MP @sonjalemke's presentation this afternoon, I was able to contribute the fact that QTS (part of #Blackstone and a frequent contractor of ICE and Palantir) is planning a new datacenter in far west of Germany – in Lippetal near Hamm, Westphalia.

I also shared a detail from a public hearing in Baden-Wuerttemberg where the police presented a device called a “data diode” as an alleged proof that no data from Palantir servers in Germany can flow to Palantir headquarters in the US – which is a ridiculous suggestion. Palantir servers – even if located inside German police authorities – are always run by Palantir staff, and they will surely find a way to exfiltrate data when asked by their bosses or the US government (which can force US companies to hand out data even if it is stored on foreign servers because of the US CLOUD and FISA acts).

Context Boosts, wow. Excellent design idea. It really reflects the classical Mastodon approach of 1. Reply; 2. Boost the original post; 3. Boost your reply. I stick to this approach religiously, but elegant it ain't. Your Context Boost bundles these three steps into one. As you say, it preserves the continued involvement of the original poster, which twitter-style QTs don't. Excellent.

Well part of it is that a lot of #journalism may not have those resources after all.

With budgets being squeezed and internal debate over future directions of the organizations, there might not be resources–money and attention–available for them to do the work to embrace #fediverse.

Forking #Mastodon for #QTs
and such, adding it to institutional workflows isn’t a trivial thing as you make it out to be!

You can create an account on Calckey, test it out, and if you like it, move your entire Mastodon account (followers, follows, posts) over very easily.

Yes. #QTs are damaging to our inner posture when talking to others. Talking about the other, not to the other. #Thou becomes #It. #Dialogue becomes competition. I become the judge, not the partner.

On arriving here last November, I instantly felt the liberating power of Mastodon's discussion customs, especially the prohibition of QTs. I endlessly thought and posted about them. The recent announcement to introduce them saddens me; I absolutely share your fears.

Currently, u can set account privacy in terms of who can see your content, AND can change that on individual posts.

Can't the same control be given to ppl QTing your content? Anyone - followers only - nobody?

Only downside: another post-level control for apps and interfaces.
