Whoo boy, the new QST rips the #QMX+ on its six meter performance and says it “should not be used to transmit anywhere on that band” because of its spurious emissions. That’s not even all they complained about.
That will put a wet blanket on your magic July propagation. I may have to fire up groups.io to see the response.

#SSB on the #QRPLabs #QMX+ 5W HF transceiver is just so unnecessarily painful. The built-in microphone doesn't work. Standard microphones don't work.
The very specific microphone capsule required goes for 21 € inc. shipping from Digikey. A finished microphone assembly by G7UFO is 41,85 € inc. shipping. The whole QMX+ kit is only 125 USD, on comparison.
I have revision 4 of the PCB. Really would have expected it to have been fixed to take any microphone by now, or come with the microphone.

There's not much else in the #hamradio world that puzzles me as much as the lack of support for compund or special callsigns in these modes. On one instance I couldn't make an FT8 call from my station EA8/DC6ST to a Russian ham visiting Belarus because the two compound callsigns did not leave any space for signal reports or even a "73" in the message.

I think there could be a business case for #QRPLabs in selling pre-wound and calibrated coils for their products. I know lots of people who would like to build a transceiver from a kit, but investing 15-20 hours of time into a 125 USD "coil-winding training kit" does not sound that appealing when the assembled and tested product goes for 185 USD.

I built a #QRPLabs QMX+ 160-6m 5W CW/SSB/Digimode transceiver from a kit over the holidays. Would I build it again? Probably not. It took about 15 hours to build, pretty much just because one has to wind 20 tiny coils and transformers. There's not much to learn since most of the functionality is implemented in the closed-source firmware. You can also buy it pre-built and pre-tested for not that much more. Mine only puts out 3W on 20m and now I have to find out why.
