Introduction

Black August approaches, the living memory of an ongoing, unfinished struggle waged by Black revolutionaries inside, against, and beyond prisons and the world they exist to uphold. The horizon of liberation that all prisons exist to obscure and bury alive will always remain accessible to our dreams and desires—will always remain there to vividly revive—so long as we advance the fight and why we fight against everything that keeps us locked away from a life worth living. The brutal eruption of intensifying state repression cannot capture this desire for freedom. Certainly its raw force can isolate, exclude, capture, crush, but so, too, does everything else in the massive open-air prison we call this world. And yet, despite everything, there’s still a crack in the barbed-wire-covered walls around the future… There’s still the possibility, at any moment, to struggle…

We are well aware that fighting against repression is dangerous, but it’s no more and no less dangerous than everything else the world has in store for us. After all, we weren’t the ones who decided how this world would look. It’s up to us to decide, just like in any struggle, what we want to do with it… Why would we refuse to face repression head on? As long as we consider repression in the wider context of the social war we’re engaged in, it shouldn’t be too difficult or contrived to respond to the blows of repression by connecting them to other forms of oppression and, above all, to other ongoing revolts. Solidarity isn’t based on repression as such but on what we recognize in ourselves that might drive individuals, actions, and struggles forward… Solidarity is much more than providing material support for people facing repression. It’s above all about advancing the fight and why we fight.

Mumia Abu-Jamal has filed a petition with the United Nations working group on Arbitrary Detention. In an interview with The Guardian, Mumia talks about the appeal: “Presenting my claims to the UN will be one of the first times that judges will be hearing them without a vested interest” … “Hope is an element of struggle, is it not? As we used to say in the old days, ‘A luta continua’.”

Black Lion Party for International Solidarity chairman Paul Birdsong was arrested on gun charges after Philadelphia’s revoked of Paul and other member’s firearm permits following police harassment of the group’s community self defense patrols. A Gofundme for legal support was set up; Paul has since released on bond.

Fighting Detention Centers

ICE is also seeking private contractors to cage 5500 people at four locations in Denver, Miami, Seattle, and near Philadelphia. Wired reports that new language in the contracts attempt to evade outside oversight, asserting that state and local laws “shall not apply” to the prisons.

DHS plans on largely scrapping the warehouse detention center boondoggle, seeking to offload buildings purchased earlier this year in Romulus, Michigan; Social Circle, Georgia; Flowery Branch, Georgia; Hamburg, Pennsylvania; Tremont, Pennsylvania; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Roxbury, New Jersey. Over $700 million was spent on these 7 warehouses, but faced opposition in the streets and town halls meetings from neighbors who do not want concentration camps in their area. Dwayne “Bim” Staats published an article at Solitary Watch, “Voices from Solitary: When Toxic Fumes Turned My Solitary Cell into a Death Trap.” Bim is currently incarcerated at the Delaware supermax facility James T. Vaughn Correctional Center. Bim has served 22 years of a life sentence, and has spent 17 years in solitary confinement in prisons across Pennsylvania and Delaware. In the following piece, Bim recounts a situation in which he and other men were trapped in an isolation unit with no ventilation, and with the air vents spewing noxious gas. While Bim’s attempts to find out the cause of the gas hit dead ends, the symptoms he describes the men experiencing notably mirror those of carbon monoxide poisoning, a medical emergency so potentially deadly that most states require carbon monoxide detectors in homes and buildings. The environmental and medical hazards commonly found in prisons and jails are well-documented, supported by the work of researchers, grassroots organizers, and other incarcerated writers. Bim is on Instagram @_bim_21 and YouTube. Our practice of solidarity is not just one of obligation, but of recognition that an ever-expanding and never-ending solidarity is part of the path to all of our freedom. Because we know ourselves to be more connected, stronger, and ultimately more capable when it is always a part of what guides us. We know there is no fixed limit or end, and the need for solidarity will always be there. We know that we find richness in the ways that it deepens our movements and selves.

This month marks 6 years since the state murder of George Floyd and the nationwide uprising that still looms on the horizon of what’s possible. June 11 returns and solidarity is endless. June 11 2026 Call to Action: Solidarity Without End

PRISONER UPDATES

Casey Goonan, a dedicated community educator, writer, distroist, and printer who has lived a life committed to struggles for liberation was arrested in June of 2024 for actions, including the arson of a UC Berkeley Police vehicle, in response to the University’s treatment of student protesters for Palestine. In September of 2025, Casey was sentenced to 19 years in prison. Casey had been in holdover at FCI Mendota, awaiting their permanent placement. Life at FCI Mendota was uncertain and challenging, as they were denied access to sufficient medical care to manage their diabetes, and had lived without personal property, stimulating programs or much time outside their cell. In February 2026, Casey was finally transferred to FCI Allenwood in Northern Pennsylvania. This placement might be temporary, but for the time being they have better medical care, phone access, time out of their cell and time in the library. They are working on a habeas petition with another legal team in order to appeal their conviction and sentencing.

An update from Casey Goonan––”Lockdowns and a Birthday”:

After dealing with a tough month or two of extended of unit-wide lockdowns, establishing a reliable program has been difficult, but Casey reports doing very well! Lockdowns still happen sporadically with little explanation so developing a daily rhythm has been a challenge. They have made a lot of friends on the unit though and for Casey’s birthday, all the guys in their car and few others quietly passed around a birthday card to sign. And to cap it off, somebody made a bangin’ spread of nachos for the occasion.

Mail and calls

Snail mail has been extremely slow and sporadic through the mailroom. They only are getting mail at least a month later than it’s postmark, which is extra frustrating because…

Casey recently received a 6 month revocation of their calling privileges and lost 27 days of good time credits as punishment for a 3-way call with their mom and brother that they didn’t even know was against the rules. So for the time being, email via Corrlinks or snail mail is the only way to talk to them.

To revisit some mail basics:
– Leave big margins on your letters. Casey only receives a black and white hardcopy scan of letters and as of yet the feds haven’t mastered using a scanner or just don’t care. Anything near the edges of the page gets cut off.
– Mail is surveilled and often pieces are outright blocked. Casey has heightened restrictions and scrutiny due to their classification and charges. Write accordingly. Know as well that some mail just doesn’t make it through.

Lil Nicky has been a great friend, and lifesaver in the yard on numerous occasions. Slated to go home in 15 months to Philly, he will be reuniting with his 13 year old son. Also, Lil Nicky is deaf and needs immediate support to buy his own hearing aids and batteries  (Yeah, the prison doesn’t supply those!).

With next to no income from a prison job, it is extremely hard to purchase supplies for your disabilities not to mention save for going home. Without support, re-entry is an extension of the isolation of incarceration, leaving just-released people in an extremely vulnerable position and often in harms way.

Lil Nicky has been there for Casey and Casey is looking to repay the favor.

Together they spend hours on lockdowns discussing sports and the state of the world. Lil Nicky is continually motivating Casey to stay focused on their goals as an abolitionist and their prisoner support work, now from the inside.

Khalif Miller is a political prisoner incarcerated for his participation in the George Floyd uprising in Philadelphia. One of several who faced federal charges, Khalif was sentenced to five years in federal prison; he has since completed his federal sentence, but is now being held at SCI Forest Pennsylvania state prison for parole violations for an earlier unrelated case. Jarreau “Ruk” Ayers

Birthday: June 15, 1981

Ayers grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, and was serving a life sentence when he was indicted—along with sixteen others—for his alleged involvement in the uprising at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Delaware in February 2017. Once convicted, he was transferred to the Pennsylvania prison system to serve his time. Ayers was released to general population in March 2024 after spending nearly 19 years in solitary confinement. Ayers is a father, pro-se litigator, co-author of Vaughn 17 Speaks, and co-founder of Rebellious Hearts, which is a movement for liberation built upon revolutionary, matriarchal, abolitionist, and Black power principles. You can follow Ayers on Instagram at @remember_ur_krown

June 11 2026 Call to Action: Solidarity Without End

PRISONER UPDATES

Casey Goonan, a dedicated community educator, writer, distroist, and printer who has lived a life committed to struggles for liberation was arrested in June of 2024 for actions, including the arson of a UC Berkeley Police vehicle, in response to the University’s treatment of student protesters for Palestine. In September of 2025, Casey was sentenced to 19 years in prison. Casey had been in holdover at FCI Mendota, awaiting their permanent placement. Life at FCI Mendota was uncertain and challenging, as they were denied access to sufficient medical care to manage their diabetes, and had lived without personal property, stimulating programs or much time outside their cell. In February 2026, Casey was finally transferred to FCI Allenwood in Northern Pennsylvania. This placement might be temporary, but for the time being they have better medical care, phone access, time out of their cell and time in the library. They are working on a habeas petition with another legal team in order to appeal their conviction and sentencing.

An update from Casey Goonan––”Lockdowns and a Birthday”:

After dealing with a tough month or two of extended of unit-wide lockdowns, establishing a reliable program has been difficult, but Casey reports doing very well! Lockdowns still happen sporadically with little explanation so developing a daily rhythm has been a challenge. They have made a lot of friends on the unit though and for Casey’s birthday, all the guys in their car and few others quietly passed around a birthday card to sign. And to cap it off, somebody made a bangin’ spread of nachos for the occasion.

Mail and calls

Snail mail has been extremely slow and sporadic through the mailroom. They only are getting mail at least a month later than it’s postmark, which is extra frustrating because…

Casey recently received a 6 month revocation of their calling privileges and lost 27 days of good time credits as punishment for a 3-way call with their mom and brother that they didn’t even know was against the rules. So for the time being, email via Corrlinks or snail mail is the only way to talk to them.

To revisit some mail basics:
– Leave big margins on your letters. Casey only receives a black and white hardcopy scan of letters and as of yet the feds haven’t mastered using a scanner or just don’t care. Anything near the edges of the page gets cut off.
– Mail is surveilled and often pieces are outright blocked. Casey has heightened restrictions and scrutiny due to their classification and charges. Write accordingly. Know as well that some mail just doesn’t make it through.

Lil Nicky has been a great friend, and lifesaver in the yard on numerous occasions. Slated to go home in 15 months to Philly, he will be reuniting with his 13 year old son. Also, Lil Nicky is deaf and needs immediate support to buy his own hearing aids and batteries  (Yeah, the prison doesn’t supply those!).

With next to no income from a prison job, it is extremely hard to purchase supplies for your disabilities not to mention save for going home. Without support, re-entry is an extension of the isolation of incarceration, leaving just-released people in an extremely vulnerable position and often in harms way.

Lil Nicky has been there for Casey and Casey is looking to repay the favor.

Together they spend hours on lockdowns discussing sports and the state of the world. Lil Nicky is continually motivating Casey to stay focused on their goals as an abolitionist and their prisoner support work, now from the inside.

Khalif Miller is a political prisoner incarcerated for his participation in the George Floyd uprising in Philadelphia. One of several who faced federal charges, Khalif was sentenced to five years in federal prison; he has since completed his federal sentence, but is now being held at SCI Forest Pennsylvania state prison for parole violations for an earlier unrelated case. Jarreau “Ruk” Ayers

Birthday: June 15, 1981

Ayers grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, and was serving a life sentence when he was indicted—along with sixteen others—for his alleged involvement in the uprising at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Delaware in February 2017. Once convicted, he was transferred to the Pennsylvania prison system to serve his time. Ayers was released to general population in March 2024 after spending nearly 19 years in solitary confinement. Ayers is a father, pro-se litigator, co-author of Vaughn 17 Speaks, and co-founder of Rebellious Hearts, which is a movement for liberation built upon revolutionary, matriarchal, abolitionist, and Black power principles. You can follow Ayers on Instagram at @remember_ur_krown

As the DHS hopes to continue expanding its network of detention centers, community resistance, legal efforts, and Kristi Noem’s departure as secretary has stalled several proposed developments.

Project Salt Box has been investigating ICE property acquisitions: according to their current data, ICE has purchased warehouses for large-scale immigrant processing and detention facilities in Romulus MI, Tremont PA, Socorro TX, Hamburg PA, Salt Lake City UT, San Antonio TX, Social Circle GA, Flowery Branch GA, Roxbury NJ, Surprise AZ, and Williamsport MD; and is currently eyeing locations in  Durant OK, Starke FL, McAllen TX, Port Allen LA, Holtsville NY, and Orlando FL.

Birthday: April 24

Mumia is an award winning journalist and was one of the founders of the Black Panther Party chapter in Philadelphia. He has struggled for justice and human rights for people of color since he was at least 14 years old––the age when he joined the Party. In December of 1982, Mumia, who moonlighted by driving a taxi, happened upon police who were beating his brother. During the melee, a police officer was shot and killed. Despite the fact that many people saw someone else shoot and then run away from the scene, Mumia was convicted and sentenced to death by what can only be called a kangaroo court. During the summer of 1995, a death warrant was signed, which sparked one of the most effective organizing efforts in defense of a political prisoner ever. 11 Charges Against the Northumberland 2 Dropped

In December 2025, Philly ABC announced that the judge overseeing the case against the Northumberland 2––Cara and Celeste, accused of freeing hundreds of minks from a fur farm in PA––dismissed ELEVEN charges total between defendants Cara and Celeste—including one count of ecoterrorism and several misdemeanors.

The next step is a pretrial conference in February. After that will come trial.

While this is big and exciting news, the case isn’t over yet. Cara and Celeste still have many charges to fight. Trial will come with extra costs on top of the other legal fees.

A new report shows Homeland Security is incarcerating people than ever before; there are 70,000 people in DHS custody, expected to increase as their detention budget exceeds even that of the Bureau of Prisons.

• Parady La died from treatable fentynyl withdrawals just days after being arrested by ICE and held at the Bureau of Prison’s facility FDC Philadelphia.

One of the two Vaughn 17 defendants to be convicted for taking part in the Vaughn prison uprising of early 2017. Dwayne and his co-defendant Jarreau “Ruk” Ayers bravely admitted to their own parts in the uprising, and then, free to testify openly without fear of incriminating themselves any further, tore holes in the prosecution’s attempts to convict anyone else – as he put it, “we’d accept being stabbed in the chest to present others from getting stabbed in the back”. Assata Shakur Returns to the Ancestors

In the words of Mumia Abu-Jamal,

Her name, Assata Shakur, has become an iconic symbol of Black revolutionary resistance to the white nation and American empire. Shot, beaten and threatened with death, Assata lived up to the meaning of her name: “She who struggles.” Born Joanne Deborah Byron on July 16, 1947, in Queens, N.Y., she came of age during the tumultuous 1960s, when young Black people joined movements and organizations devoted to Black liberation. She joined the Black Panther Party and later, the Black Liberation Army (BLA), and emerged as one of its best-known and best-loved members.

When three young Panthers were driving south on the New Jersey Turnpike, they were ambushed by state troopers, and a shoot-out ensued. One Panther, Zayd Malik Shakur and a state trooper, were shot and killed. Assata was also shot, under her arm. The third Panther, Sundiata Acoli, also survived the ambush. Both survivors were charged with murder. Assata endured some 10 trials or so, winning acquittal after acquittal after acquittal. She was convicted once, and the state threatened her with another conviction for killing of Zayd.

A BLA squad went to her jail and set her free. Shortly thereafter, she made it to Cuba, which granted her political asylum. She began teaching in Cuba, wrote riveting poetry, and prayed for social change in America, and of course, freedom for the Black Nation. She served her people and freedom’s cause with bravery, beauty and brilliance. She represented her generation as Harriet Tubman represented hers.

New immigrant detention centers

DHS is hoping to accelerate the expansion of its network of detention centers opening several new facilities as it considers renovating warehouses for “mega detention centers” and contracts $10 billion to the U.S. Navy to begin construction of what could include “soft-sided” tent setups in in Louisiana, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Utah and Kansas.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is holding people for ICE in at least five facilities at Miami, Atlanta, Leavenworth, Philadelphia and Berlin.

As of late June, Prison Riot Radio were circulating a call for action over extreme heat at the James T Vaughn prison in Delaware. They write:

Right now, over 300 people are trapped in the W Building at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center – no air conditioning, no ventilation, no relief – in 100°+ heat.

Many are sick. The building is overcrowded. There’s black mold on the walls. And DOC is leaving them to suffer during a deadly heat wave.

This is a life-or-death crisis.

There’s an air-conditioned gym on site. They could be moved today. But Delaware DOC hasn’t done a thing.

George Floyd Uprising Defendants, Stop Cop City and Other Ongoing Cases

Cara and Celeste, who are facing charges connected to an alleged mink liberation action, have a court date scheduled for April 21st in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, where the defense will present a motion arguing for their charges to be dismissed. The Final Straw Radio also recently broadcast an interview with one of the RICO defendants alongside one of the organizers of the upcoming Stop Cop City: Imaginary Crimes tour, which will be visiting over 60 cities.

Mumia Abu-Jamal

Mumia is an award winning journalist and was one of the founders of the Black Panther Party chapter in Philadelphia, PA. He has struggled for justice and human rights for people of color since he was at least 14 years old; the age when he joined the Party. In December of 1982, Mumia, who moonlighted by driving a taxi, happened upon police who were beating his brother. During the melee, a police officer was shot and killed. Despite the fact that many people saw someone else shoot and then run away from the scene, Mumia, in what could only be called a kangaroo court, was convicted and sentenced to death. During the summer of 1995, a death warrant was signed by Governor Tom Ridge, which sparked one of the most effective organizing efforts in defense of a political prisoner ever. Since that time, Mumia has had his death sentence overturned, but still has a life sentence with no opportunity for parole.

George Floyd Uprising Defendants, Stop Cop City and Other Ongoing Cases

Cara and Celeste, who are facing charges connected to an alleged mink liberation action, have a court date scheduled for April 21st in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, where the defense will present a motion arguing for their charges to be dismissed. Donations to their legal funds can be made via Philly ABC here.

The Final Straw Radio also recently broadcast an interview with one of the RICO defendants alongside one of the organizers of the upcoming Stop Cop City: Imaginary Crimes tour, which will be visiting over 60 cities.

Pennsylvania uprising defendant Khalif Miller has now completed his federal sentence and been moved to a state prison to serve a state sentence for violating parole. His new address is:
