  9. There are reports that the brightness of some of the Chinese #Qianfan satellites is varying on short timescales. (e.g., satobs.org/seesat/Mar-2025/004)

    This behavior suggests that these satellites (and possibly others) from the second Qianfan launch are currently tumbling in orbit.

  12. Brightness of the #Qianfan Satellites: arxiv.org/abs/2409.20432 -> "Observed magnitudes of Qianfan spacecraft range from 4 when they are near zenith to 8 when low in the sky. Nearly all of the observations can be modeled with a nadir-facing flat antenna panel and the underside of a zenith-facing solar array, both with Lambertian reflectance properties. These satellites will impact astronomical research unless their brightness is reduced."

  13. Chinese rocket Long March 6A breaks apart after megaconstellation launch, creating cloud of space junk.

    The rocket successfully delivered the the first 18 satellites for the #Qianfan ("Thousand Sails") broadband network to low Earth orbit (LEO), at an altitude of about 800 kilometers.

    The megaconstellation will eventually host up to 14,000 spacecraft.
