When asset prices are inflated, soon they become out of reach of most of the people. That point has come. #QE, #QEII and its cousins have gone on for far too long.

The problem with #QE and inflating asset prices is that one by one the assets are priced out of reach of middle class and lower middle class till none are left. This train ride has been going on since 2008, more than 17 years and counting. Added to this is the liberal capitalism which promotes transfer of wealth from the bottom 70% to the top 10%. And finally the #forever wars, which are paid for in debt.

Chickens were bound to come home to roost.

@freemo Well #QE isn’t the only policy of his that affected the economy, he also did things like approve new pipelines and deregulated certain sectors to a degree. Production boomed under his presidency, keeping pace with the #QE, which is why he got away with it. He really shouldn’t have used #QE in the way that he did, because that would have made the economy boom even more.

But what makes you think that #Trump did this merely for optics’ sake?

I tripped over a misunderstanding of Modern Monetary Theory this morning in an Interview with Robert Prechter of Elliott Wave international, who in my view misinterprets just about anything macroeconomic; it was on Doug Casey's Take; but it was another interviewee, in this case, Matt Smith, who claimed that Washington has been captured by MMT & uses Quantitative Easing as evidence of that capture.
I went looking online & it appears that this misconception is not uncommon, equating MMT with QE.

I looked up Prof. Bill Mitchell's blog & found this post from 2019 which relates to Japan's use of QE since 1990.

I would be most surprised if anyone with the faintest idea of MMT would consider QE to be one of its tenets. Government bonds not being an essential feature of macroeconomics, just a way of providing those wealthy enough to purchase them with an unearned income stream & by reducing bank reserves.

During the 2008 financial crisis, central banks lowered interest rates to near zero then have done QE by buying (incl.junk) bonds therefore increasing their balance sheets. Since 2019 (with a pause during pandemic) they started to do the opposite, quantitative tightening selling bonds however this pushing rates higher
