I've always been both intimidated and impressed by people who use CAD programs to engineer parts and designs for Real Life Stuff. I have a camper trailer than needed a gusset plate to support the upper rack - and decided it was time to learn enough CAD to design it.

So, behold a gusset plate to support a T connection of 2" support pipes, while leaving room for the weld and join. Next step, laser cutter to cut a wood template to test-fit, then waterjet to cut the steel.

This feels like the kinda skill that feels useful to learn, but also that I have 0 reason to actually know how to do other than occasionally vaguely try to draw spaceships

But hey, I've never experimented with a skill without it slowly growing me in other unexpected areas.

... probably not going to get really good at this unless the software market completely dies though. Then maybe, we'd see.
