Canada opening new consulate in Greenland this week, in a bid for closer relations https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canada-greenland-consulate-9.6973864 CBC by
Emma Godmere - Excellent news! I had the privilege and pleasure of visiting #Greenland this year! We went first to #Qaanaaq then to #Nuuk we definitely need to strengthen our ties to Greenland. #arcticsecurity #arctic #economic #defence -
Another cold frosty morning but the big freeze is lifting in Copenhagen slowly. It's a perfect #icetodon moment as this morning I'm off to the Danish #GreenlandIceSheet seminar to talk about this place 👇among other things: #DMI's geophysical facility in #Qaanaaq NW #Greenland where we're putting together an intensive #glaciology programme...

I've never seen the Elephant's foot #Glacier (other than in pictures), which is in a very remote part of NE #Greenland
But this one is a similar shape & therefore highly appropriate for #Mastodon.
As well as being a beautiful illustration of the viscosity of #ice#PiedmotLobe on the way to #Ilulissat from #Qaanaaq

Sitting at #Qaanaaq Airport waiting for flight south and the #Greenland national #dogsled race at #Sisimiut is on #KNR TV; whole airport (at least 20 people!) are cheering on the local boys..
Very exciting. More channels outside Greenland should show this. -
Planning #Fieldwork in NW #Greenland and stumbled over this stunning #Sentinel2 image from September last year processed on #SentinelHub #EOBrowser
Look at that cute little #cyclone by #ThuleAirBase

"For at forstå, hvad der er ved at ske ved kloden, rejste vi mod isens ende"
"To understand what is happening to the earth, we travelled to the end of the ice" -I wrote a new post about #fieldwork.near #Qaanaaq in NW #Greenland inspired in part by the wonderful piece in #InformationDK by Martin Bahn og Anders Rye Skjoldjensen (gift link in post).

Decided to write a little intro to the #fieldwork and #science at the #DMIdk #FieldLaboratory of #Qaanaaq.
Beats the washing up on #ChristmasDay I suppose?
Will probably edit later and I will certain add more links and expand with some new posts as I get time...

Fantastic + beautifully illustrated article in Danish Newspaper #InformationDK about the project my #DMIdk colleague Steffen M Olsen has pioneered over the last 15 years in #Qaanaaq NW #Greenland.
And now we're adding #glaciers + #IceSheets as part of #NCKF work.
In Danish but try DeepL to translate.
This should be a gift link! 🎁 -
This article from #Greenland public media #KNR is about how a storm affected #Qaanaaq + other small communities in north west Greenland by breaking up #seaIce and destroying #fishing equipment the local population of #fishers and #hunters rely on for income especially at this time of year.
It's a textbook example of how severe #weather (and yes probably #ClimateChange too) multilply existing societal vulnerability.https://knr.gl/da/nyheder/fiskerne-og-fangerne-i-qaanaaq-er-ogs%C3%A5-ramt-af-d%C3%A5rlig-vinter

As ever massive thanks to #DMIdk colleagues #AndreaGierisch and #SteffenOlsen for explaining the #Ocean + #SeaIce theory behind the beauty. Also thanks to amazing hunters in #Qaanaaq for getting us to places with their dogs that #Scientists seldom reach...
