  1. Heh. I should have cropped it this way. The goldfinch peering down at the nuthatch is the best part.

  2. We've enjoyed the antics of the White Breasted Nuthatches for years. But I'd never seen pygmy nuthatches. Until this year, and now we have two. They're tiny, very brave, and “peep” like a songbird. (The White Breasted almost honk, like a goose.) And they've been infuriatingly difficult to get on camera. On two occasions they've been close enough to reach out and touch, and on neither of those occasions did I have a camera.

  3. I am usually the last to arrive at a birder flash mob, but finally ventured across town to see the #PygmyNuthatch flock visiting the Rose City Golf Course area. Thanks to another local birder who had just spotted them (while on a beer run), I got to glimpse the teeny birds hunkered in murky shade of a pine canopy. Thought they were in bed for the evening - but they perked up as horizontal rays of last sunset light illuminated the branches. Good looks, and they were off, 8 of them, pip pip pip!
