  1. hi all 👋 this is a #Canberra-based post about a kids in #STEM programme, apologies for the wall of text if that’s not relevant to you 😬 but pls #boost4reach 🙏

does anyone know any Canberra (or surrounds) kids in grades 7-10 who are interested in STEM & would like to join a #LEGO #robotics team? I’m volunteering with a Canberra team participating in the FIRST LEGO League Challenge (FIRST = “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology”, it’s not the first one 🤪)

the various programmes are broken out into age ranges – info about this particular one (the “challenge” level) is on their website at firstaustralia.org/first-lego-, although their website is super confusing & unhelpful unless you already know exactly what you’re looking for

this team meets on Sundays in Acton from 11:00-14:00 with the skills building running through until mid-November & then there’s a regional competition in Wollongong on 14th November

so if you know anyone who has kids in the right age range that might find this interesting, pls pass on the info & DM me if anyone wants to join or have a chat (pls no personal details, we’ll switch to Signal after an initial DM). I’d especially love to get some more girls & enby folks involved, but the team welcomes all genders

I’ve been asked to make it super-duper clear that this is not LEGO Masters – apparently they’ve had a couple of kids come along in previous years only to bail after a few weeks when they didn’t get to build LEGO Masters style stuff 🙃

anyone who’s interested in learning some coding (#Python using #PyBricks), engineering, & problem-solving while learning about #biodiversity (this year’s theme), teamwork, & planning might be a good fit

thx all, pls share with anyone who might have or know kids in or near Canberra who would be interested & pls #boost4reach 🙏

  4. @laurensvalk Nice to see you here! You may want to check out digitalcourage.social/@f09fa68 - it's all done using #Pybricks for the last hop now with a primary train hub and N secondary train hubs (listening on a broadcast channel). Think I should make it open source but the entanglement with #Threema group calls makes it a bit tricky right now.

  7. Make way for the #LEGO train!

#Pybricks is really amazing. It also gets rid of the PWM motor whine by using a different PWM frequency. I'm now gonna throw away the whole LEGO BLE protocol implementation and flash all my train hubs to Pybricks.

  9. Thanks for the mention on Linux Out Loud @WendyDLN

Here's some additional notes that may or may not be useful 😀 , roughly in order of the podcast.

    1. Firefox not supporting Web Bluetooth/USB is unlikely to change due to security concerns. See their official position here: mozilla.github.io/standards-po

Glad you found Chromium as an alternative.

    2. Thank you for being supportive of having some add-on stuff for supporters like block coding! It's a fine balance to make work.

  11. Control your train with your other sets using !

Kids can normally drive the train with an iPad, but this adds some fun play and learning opportunities beyond the push-and-go function, without extra screen time.

And it's pretty easy! Full guide: pybricks.com/project/control-t

This demo is really basic, but you can build your own dashboard with literal bells and whistles 😀

  12. Control your #Duplo train with your other #LEGO sets using #Pybricks #micropython !

  20. @hendrix79 @alicesutaren @maehw Oh, that's very recent! Fully supported with #Pybricks

It has a simple protocol to exchange data by advertising and scanning data over BLE.

By making your Raspberry Pi broadcast such data, your hub can listen to that and follow commands.

  21. Here's #Pybricks #MicroPython used in astronomy! This is a brilliant #LEGO Orrery running with a Technic Hub, and a camera to replicate actual astronomy measurements to teach students how it works in practice. Check out more details in the original post here: reddit.com/r/Astronomy/comment

  22. Did you know you can mix blocks and #MicroPython with #Pybricks?

A teacher recently asked if Spike can read the computer keyboard. While we don't have a dedicated block yet, you can easily do it in MicroPython.

So... you can write a Python function and just call it from your block program! The possibilities are really endless.

  24. A teacher asked if you can do data logging with the new #Pybricks block interface.
    Of course you can!

There's special block to print columns of data. You can visualize it with your favorite spreadsheet tools for some real hands on learning.

  25. I'm super excited to finally share what I've been working on for the past months... #Pybricks now supports block coding in addition to #micropython !

For the first time ever, fans of all LEGO® themes can bring their smart bricks together in a single app for endless possibilities and creativity.

And possibilities really are endless! Stay tuned for some exciting updates in the coming weeks.
