New Vibes Based Hockey article! In this one, I discuss the closing of the PHF from a queer perspective. I go into the effect this has had on fans, myself, and even how it affects queer (especially trans) athletes.

Women's sports are queer in their core conception. They are transgressive by existing. To fail to acknowledge that is a failure to interact with reality.
So as you can imagine, I am concerned with these reports about Stan Kasten's opinion on the PHF branding and especially that of the Boston Pride being "too controversial."

One of the best articles I've seen on the PWHPA/PHF situation in women's hockey right now, written by Erica Ayala. No paywall. She interviewed PHF team ownership, their commissioner, a long time PHF player, and a PWHPA board member. Check it out.

New Vibes Based Hockey article: in this one, I discuss the PWHPA hostile takeover of the PHF. All the details of what happened and what this means for the players, and more importantly: why this is destructive to the sport.

If you're wondering what is happening in Women's Pro Hockey, the PHF has been acquired by the LA Dodgers' controlling owner, Mark Walter. The league will shutter and consolidate with PWHPA to create a unified women's hockey league that is expected to launch in January 2024.
The primary concern is what this does to PHF contracts. This will void all current contracts and provide all players with a minimum salary of $35,000.

great news for women's #sports!

Follow up, Hailey Salvian at The Athletic has just posted a story on it. Paywall, unfortunately, but here it is.

Holy fuck. It looks like the PWHPA and PHF may be merging. Wow.

That could spark a bidding war for the Northeastern University grad's services at the pro level.

Can't get tired enough to sleep, and the PWHPA Championship just started. Might as well watch that.

Happy to announce I'm contributing to the newly-independent The Ice Garden, which has been a mainstay of women's hockey coverage and had an giant role in getting me into the sport, so I'm thrilled to see it thrive + be a part of it. I'll be doing a lot of my data viz + other stats stuff (+ writing, which, I want to practice) there, and would love if you checked it out and subscribed if so inclined (for free or a paid tier).

Alright y'all, I'll be honest: we're going to have to drop PWHPA coverage on Vibes Based Hockey. The reality is, they're too hard to cover. They don't release highlights, box scores worth a damn in figuring out what happened in the game, etc. If you want to cover the league, you actually have to watch every damn game to figure out what happened. I don't have the time to do so. I'm one person. Going to have to stop covering that league. Sorry. #WomensSports #PWHPA #Hockey

Hey, Mastodon hockey fans: I have created a spreadsheet to keep track of hockey fans of various leagues. It is an opt-in list, and if you would like to be on it, so other hockey fans can find you, please comment below! It would be great for hockey fans on this platform to be able to find each other easily.

So, with how much coverage of women's hockey is being cut, what kind of coverage of women's hockey do you want from me? Do you want me to cover PWHPA and watch and write about each of their games? Do you want me to do a game of the week for the PHF? Do a weekly roundup of news and scores for the PHF (and maybe also PWHPA and/or NCAA)? What do you want?

The PWHPA All Star Skills Competition and 3 on 3 Tournament was held in #Ottawa today. After the points were tallied up Team Keller came out on top.
Marie-Philip Poulin won the individual Skills Challenge with a time of 37.881, 28 seconds better than the previous fastest time and 9 seconds faster than eventual second place. Shocking, I know.
