  3. NCP enters administration putting key Swansea car parks at risk

National Car Parks (NCP), which operates around 340 car parks across the UK, has called in administrators from PwC after running out of cash.

The company employs more than 680 people nationwide and manages parking at key locations including city centres, hospitals, airports and transport hubs.

    What it means right now

Despite the move, drivers are being told it’s business as usual — for now.

Administrators say all car parks remain open, staff are still in place, and there will be no immediate changes for customers.

But a full review of the business is now underway — and that could ultimately lead to closures or changes at some sites.

Major Swansea sites under the spotlight

In Swansea, NCP operates several of the city centre’s best-known car parks — all of which are now part of the administration process.

These include Kingsway (328 spaces), Orchard Street (512 spaces), City Gates (251 spaces), Jockey Street (36 spaces), and a small additional site at Northampton Lane. A further NCP car park also operates in Neath on Orchard Street.

Together, these sites provide hundreds of spaces used daily by shoppers, commuters and visitors, making them a key part of the city’s infrastructure.

While no specific closures have been confirmed, administrators have made clear that every site will be assessed for viability.

A company with decades of history

National Car Parks is one of the UK’s oldest parking operators, with roots dating back to the 1930s as car ownership began to rise across Britain.

Originally formed to manage growing demand for city parking, the business expanded rapidly in the post-war years, becoming a familiar name in towns and cities across the country.

Over the decades, NCP grew into a dominant force in the sector, operating hundreds of sites and becoming synonymous with multi-storey car parks in urban centres.

However, like many traditional parking operators, it has struggled to adapt to changing travel habits in recent years — particularly the decline in daily commuting.

    Why NCP has entered administration

According to PwC, the company has struggled for years following the pandemic.

Changes in working habits — particularly the shift to home working — have reduced demand for city centre parking, while long-term lease agreements have left the business locked into high costs.

In a statement, PwC said the company had insufficient cash to meet its financial obligations, forcing directors to place it into administration.

    Zelf Hussain, joint administrator, said:

“NCP has faced a challenging trading environment over several years, with changing consumer behaviours impacting volumes, and a high fixed cost-base leading to trading losses.”

    He added:

“All sites are open, staff remain in post, and trading continues as normal.”

    Jobs and closures risk

Although staff remain employed for now, the future is uncertain.

Administrators are exploring options including selling all or part of the business, while also negotiating with landlords in a bid to cut costs.

However, they have warned that some locations may not be viable, meaning closures are a real possibility.

    What happens next

For now, drivers across Swansea and Neath can continue to use NCP car parks as normal.

But with every site under review, the longer-term future of some locations remains unclear.

For city centre businesses already facing challenges, any loss of parking could have a knock-on effect — making this a story that’s likely to develop in the weeks ahead.

  4. @Geri @sashag

I was a Senior IT Consultant with #PwC and, in 1989, I was working at North West Water with some American colleagues.

At an end of project gathering, one of the American consultants asked if I'd like a "shag" which I thought was a bit forward 😲

It transpired that in US English, shag has a different meaning to that in UK English 🤦😜😂

  5. OK, #PwC has now put a solid use of data clause into the contract. It says explicitly that they will only use our data for our project, that it will be deleted once the project is done except for stuff they need to save for legal reasons, and that it will be logically segregated from data belonging to their other clients.
Obviously, I still have to take on faith that they will do what they agreement says, but that would be true for any consultant.

  6. Several major international businesses closed or evacuated offices in Gulf countries after Iran threatened US- and Israel-linked economic targets and centres in the Middle East. US finance group Citi and British consultancy #Deloitte evacuated offices in Dubai's financial centre, while #PwC , another British consultancy, closed offices in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the #UAE and Kuwait. #HSBC has closed all branches in Qatar until further notice.

  7. So, #PwC Germany said sure, no problem, we'll remove that section from the contract. But they didn't replace it with anything else, so the revised contract doesn't say when they will delete our data after the engagement is over.
I wrote back and pointed this out and asked for them to fix it.
I also asked them what steps would be taken to ensure that our data doesn't get mixed up with data from other engagements whose customers _did_ agree with the "Use of Data" language I objected to.

  12. Top data visualizations of 2025, from Pew Research Center’s designers – Pew Research Center

Our favorite data visualizations of 2025

December 15, 2025, By Alissa Scheller

Every year, designers at Pew Research Center create hundreds of charts, maps and other data visualizations. We also help make a range of other digital products, from “scrollytelling” features to quizzes based on our research and large interactive databases.

All of these products are aimed at communicating our research findings clearly and concisely. Our graphics must have clear takeaways and engage readers. They also must be easily viewed on small screens, especially as smartphones have become so widespread.

Ultimately, our graphics should tell a story about our research, whether it’s about changing media habits or shifting social norms. Below, we’ll highlight a few of our favorite visuals from 2025 and walk through how we made them and what makes them successful.

Showing shifts over time with alluvial diagrams

Alluvial diagrams are named after the alluvial “fans” that naturally form in sediment from streams of water. Sometimes called Sankey diagrams, they’re a unique way of showing changes over time. They allow us to show changes in the composition of various categories of data between two points in time.

In the two examples below, bars and columns represent the categories in each year, while the flows between them show changes in the composition of those categories. We could easily show this data as a simple bar or column chart, but alluvial diagrams allow us to show not only that shifts happened, but also how they happened.

The first graphic shows how the American electorate shifted between 2020 and 2024, leading to President Donald Trump’s return to the White House:

This chart uses a paneled version of an alluvial diagram to highlight different voter flows between 2020 and 2024. In both the static and interactive versions of the visualization, we walk readers through the decisions that three categories of Americans – 2020 Trump voters, 2020 Biden voters and 2020 nonvoters – made in 2024. With this type of diagram, we can show how relatively small changes drove a larger electoral shift.

Alluvial diagrams are particularly useful for survey data that comes from the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), a group of U.S. adults who agree to take our polls regularly. With a survey panel like the ATP, we’re able to poll the same people regularly, and alluvial diagrams allow us to show how their attitudes and experiences have – or have not – changed over time.

We also used an alluvial diagram – albeit in a slightly different way – to visualize how Israeli Jewish adults have switched their affiliation within Judaism since childhood. The diagram below shows how Israeli people were raised and how they currently identify:

At the Center, we don’t use alluvial diagrams often. But when called for, they can be a powerful way of breaking down changes in various categories over time. We’ve also used them to show shifts in U.S. public opinion about Chinaacquittal and conviction rates in federal trials, and how the number of women’s colleges in the United States has declined over time

  13. ATO refers hundreds of thousands of taxpayers to a private debt collector – including people on Centrelink benefits
    theguardian.com/australia-news

The ATO is handballing thousands of people to Recoveriescorp. This misstep by the ATO is going to have disastrous consequences, like we saw with RoboDebt.

Recoveriescorp is a debt collector that's funded by private equity.

The business-model for private equity is buy-up other companies. This buy-up generates a massive debt. Companies that get consumed by a private equity firm are usually saddled with that debt. But, the reason those companies were up for sale is they were in bad shape. Now they've gone from underperforming to being in existential crisis. Their primary motivation becomes making as much money as possible, as quickly as possible, and by any means possible. Recoveriescorp is desperate to make money, and will hit anyone to make a buck.

What kind of company is Recoveriescorp?

    Follow the money!

Recoveriescorp is owned by Nutun Australia Holdings Pty Ltd, which is part of Dove Bidco Pty Ltd, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Allegro Funds Pty Ltd.

    Clear as mud.

    How about Allegro Funds?

Back in January 2023, news emerged that PwC had been leaking secret Australian Government tax plans to corporations for up to ten years. PwC had abused its position as consultants to the Australian Government. Additionally, PwC ran what appears to me is a sham investigation to cover-up their own dirty deeds. (For more info, see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PwC_tax_).

As the result of this scandal, PwC lost A$680 million, about 20% of its overall income.

To extricate itself from the disaster of its own making, PwC spun-off the part of its business responsible for the acursed "Government Services". That was in June 2023. (For more info, see abc.net.au/news/2023-06-25/pwc). The core of new company was 117 former PwC partners, then filled-out with more than 1,500 other PwC staff. It was named Scyne Advisory.

In November 2023, PwC sold Scyne Advisory to Allegro Funds for $1.

You read that right: one dollar.

Now Recoveriescorp, owned by Allegro Funds and haunted by the ghost of Scyne Advisory (née PwC), has a fresh deal with the Australian Taxation Office. The ATO hasn't learned anything from its past mistakes. They did a deal with Recoveriescorp to act as a debt collector and try to claw money from people on Centrelink.
