“A Punch in the Gut”: After Years of Waiting, Many Opioid Victims Will Be Shut Out of Purdue Settlement (ProPublica, 2026-04-23)
https://www.propublica.org/article/purdue-settlement-leaves-opioid-victims-behind
———>> Nearly 140,000 people filed claims against the company for the harm they said its drugs caused. Fewer than half of them will get any compensation.
>> ... last November, a federal judge approved a new plan that would allow the payouts to start.
>> But this $7.4 billion bankruptcy plan — including $870 million that has been set aside for individual victims — will shut out tens of thousands of those who originally applied for a settlement, ProPublica and The Philadelphia Inquirer found. Fewer than half of those who filed claims against #Purdue will get any kind of help under the new plan, ...

(ARTE, Neu!)

The group of survivors – 75 people out of >82k who filed claims against the #BoyScouts – argued that #SCOTUS should have reopened the settlement in light of its decision last year in a similar legal dispute in involving #PurduePharma, the maker of the #opioid pain mediciation #OxyContin. In that case, a 5-4 majority rejected a bankruptcy agreement that would have shielded the #Sackler family from future lawsuits even though it made its fortune running the company.

The deal is among the largest in a series of opioid settlements brought by state & local governments against drugmakers, wholesalers & pharmacies that totaled about $50 billion. It could close a long chapter — & maybe the entire book — on a legal odyssey over efforts to hold the company to account for its role in an #OpioidCrisis connected to 900,000 deaths in the U.S. since 1999, including deaths from #heroin & illicit #fentanyl.

The deal overseen by US Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane would require members of the #Sackler family who own the company to contribute up to $7 billion & give up ownership. The new agreement replaces one #SCOTUS rejected last year, finding it would have improperly protected members of the family against future lawsuits. The judge said he would explain his decision in a hearing Tuesday.
