We're finally getting some of that Kona storm that's been messing up the other islands. It is extremely windy and rainy.
With storms from the Kona direction, we're sometimes spared the worst of it because we are behind Mauna loa. It becomes the opposite of the normal rain shadow effect. So the last couple days when everyone else was getting it, we mostly just had clouds. But starting last night, it really started to go hard here. And it seems like we're right in the middle of it now.
As for where we are, you see the big red/yellow splotch in the center? I'm right around the right tip of that splotch. Here's the full radar: https://radar.weather.gov/station/phwa/standard

It didn't rain most of the morning, so I decided to go out and get water at the public water spigots by the local transfer station (where trash and recycling goes).
Of course it was pouring when I got there, so I waited in my car for 10 mins, but the rain stayed strong. So I just ran out and refilled my water. Didn't get too too wet, plus I got this extremely jungly photo of the entrance to the transfer station 😁
There were a bunch of wet chickens standing around under the trees. (Chickens, cats, and pigs congregate in that area. It's a true watering hole 😅)

I was browsing homes for sale near my temple on the Big Island. I sorted by price high to low and saw tons of beautiful places I could never afford even if I wanted to. Then I sorted by price low to high and found hundreds of empty lots selling for less than $50,000... because they're covered in (or close to) #Kilauea's lava. Heartbreaking to visit the addresses on Google Earth and see the beautiful homes those folks lost. #Hawaii #Pahoa #Volcano #MountainView #Puna

@energiepirat"A study uncovered mummified mice on high-elevation #Andean #volcanoes, revealing that 👉 mammals can survive in extreme, #Mars-like conditions. This finding challenges our understanding of vertebrate life’s physiological limits👈 and prompts further research into these mice’s survival mechanisms.

just saw a massive low-flying dark grey cargo plane fly right over our neighborhood, going north to south. we basically never get air traffic (aside from the very ocasional tourist helicopter), so it was a bit of a shock. (it was flying almost as low as the incoming planes you can see in hilo).
my first thought was "oh god this is it: someone dropped the bomb and i didn't even hear about it because i was in the garden." (anyone who was on the islands when that false bomb warning got sent to everyone's phones will know what i mean!)
then i thought...maybe it's a cargo plane of aid headed from hilo airport to maui. that is the hypothesis i'm going with for now.

3 massive rainbow #eucalyptus, 2 cars almost completely eaten by the jungle, 1 banana patch, and the bike i was riding. if this doesn't give you a taste of our area, i don't know what will 😅

our block. in the first photo, you can see a tiny strip of ocean in the distance!
it may look like no one lives here, but that's just because everyone has their houses behind forest for privacy.
this forest is primarily 'ohi'a lehua, but it includes many kinds of trees & plants that people have planted over the years.

rainbow #eucalyptus (Eucalyptus deglupta) in front of my neighbor's house. it's a beautiful, huge tree! 🥰

In the northernmost part of Argentina these Andean flamingos have adapted to their landscape and thrive among the salt flats and cacti deserts.
