We've discussed pumped storage as a way of maximising the benefit of renewable energy before here, so great to see three new pumped storage facilities in Northern Scotland given the go ahead this week.... While this needs to be balanced with other forms of storage, the location near much renewable generation, will reduce the problem of the interconnectors (and the log-jam in expansion) at least.

Iron-air batteries look promising, as do other chemistries, but can we afford to wait for them?I live in a coal mining area. We have lots of big holes in the ground. PHES is a viable, environmentally benign use for them.

But I used to live in the Gt Glen and saw the scale of environmental damage done by early pumped storage schemes - #LochNess/#LochMhor at #Foyers. But not only the early ones! The #GlenDoe scheme above #FtAugustus flooded a massive basin of #peatland supporting. good breeding populations of rare waders …dunlin, golden plover & greenshank… in the #Monadhliath
