Jem Ward was backed by Mr Novell in his defeat of Tom Cannon who was backed by Mr Joseph ‘Pea Green’ Hayne. Hayne (pic) expressed doubt over the outcome & after he settled his bets he declared his involvement in the #PrizeRing was over. The loss of Hayne’s financial backing was devastating for #Prizefighting.

Tom Cannon (pic) knocks out Josh Hudson after 17rds & 20min at #Yateley in #Hampshire. In response the Ropes are cut & a group rush the Ring to prevent Cannon from coming to scratch. John Jackson lamented his influence was dead & declared he would never attend another fight.

And thus with the loss to Jack Scroggins in November 1820, Harry Holt’s #Prizefighting career ended & he never entered the Prize Ring as a professional fighter again, instead he turned to #training fighters & #promoting the Ring as one of the sport’s most devoted & staunch advocates of the era.
