Skomer Island, Wales
Atlantic puffins bash beaks. Skomer has the biggest puffin colony in southern Britain, with more than 52,000 birds recorded in 2026. The puffins visit the island between April and July to breed.Billing (sometimes called "clattering") is an example of puffin social behaviour. They tap their beaks together to reinforce pair bonds or re-establish their hierarchy after a long winter apart at sea.

A #Puffling! There weren't many young #Puffins to be seen when I visited Skomer a month ago—nearly all stayed in their burrows, safe from marauding Gulls. Occasionally though, one would emerge for a bit of wing-stretching and flapping.
By now the Pufflings are all gone, having left their burrows at night to avoid predation and jumped down into the sea below. Around 75% or more of them will make it to five years old, at around which age they pair up and start breeding.

It’s inspired by a moment on a boat trip to #BassRock when I watched a #guillemot dive just below the surface and I could see it clearly swimming alongside the boat for some distance. I've tried to express some of the thrill of seeing that. The rest is imagined!
