What happens after a puffball releases all of it spores? With most puffballs the outer layer (peridium) is frail enough that the whole puffball just sort of collapses. But with thicker-rinded species like this Pigskin Poison Puffball, the layer can peel back leaving behind a cool looking lace-edged crater.

They can be added to soups and stews and such. #OTD #California newspapers reported that #Botanists discovered a new #Plant.The plant is #Native to the area around #Lake #Shasta. A member of the #Rose #Family, it has the charming common name Shasta #Snow #Wreath.
One of California's rarest #Plants, the #Beautiful #Blossom lasts 10 days in the #Spring. It looks like a white spikey #Puffball made up of a cluster of #Stamens rather than #Petals.
Today there are roughly 20 clusters of Shasta Snow-Wreath in California.
