  1. The final tea of the Pu-Erh.SK raw puerh educational tasting flight was Xiaguan Tuocha 2005. Xiaguan is well known for its Iron Cakes and it's mushroom top shaped tuocha cakes. It's not uncommon to find older Xiaguan cakes, but it is somewhat uncommon to find cleanly stored examples. This is a well stored example.

  2. Tea number 9 in this Pu-Erh.SK raw puerh tasting flight is a 2011 "Big Green Tree". The proprietor has done some research and found this particular batch of "BGT" was a special commission of particularly high quality material.

  4. Tea number seven in this educational puerh tasting from Pu-Erh.SK was Yiwu Gaoshan 2015. Some fine hot leaf water, well on its way to being exceptional hot leaf water. If you don't like this, you probably don't like raw puerh.

  9. Raw puerh number 2 in the Pu-Erh.SK tasting flight was one of Pu-Erh.SK's Thailand raw puerh, 2023 Mind Switch. I think I got a piece from a tighter compressed portion of the cake, resulting in more broken leaves and higher astringency. (I also feel like I underdosed the first brew, and overdosed second brew. Feeling zoomy.) Slightly fruity with a minty aftertaste.

  12. I'm guessing Tea No 10 from this Pu-Erh.SK educational raw puerh tasting flight is some pretty old commercial puerh. Comprised mostly of broken pieces, flavor is a tad smoky but the smoke is well integrated and blended with the perfume. No off storage flavors, mellow and drinkable. Lingering sweet/bitter.

  14. Number 7 on this Pu-Erh.SK sample flight is a very nice raw puerh with a little apparent age. A bit more assertive than some of the other teas in the set. A rounded filling flavor, perfume/incense character, and lengthy after impressions.

  15. Starting to think that the structure of this Pu-Erh.SK tasting might be that the even numbered teas are more "industrial" and the odd numbered teas are smaller batch. So far, all the odd teas are looser press and more entire leaves. 5 is another very nice tea; subtle soft flavor, lingering scent in the bowl, pleasant returning sweetness on the palate.

  17. The third tea from Peter's visit to a Taiwan tea shop is a Dayi Shou Puerh of indeterminate age. Raw Puerh is often not really prized until it has decades of age on it. Ripe Puerh was originally created to mimic the effect of decades of age, by fast aging Puerh material in warm, wet piles. Dayi is a very well known factory Puerh producer. It may not be well known, but a little age on Shou Puerh, and it loses the characteristics that many find distasteful in young ripe puerh.

  19. 2011 BGT Yiwu Sheng Puerh (Huangpian) via pu-erh.sk. "BGT" stands for "Big Green Tree" and it refers to an illustration of a green tree on Puerh wrappers. "Huangpian" teas are made from less than perfect looking leaves which are put aside during the production of Puerh tea. The advantage to Huangpian is that, visual imperfections aside, it gives you access to teas at a relatively reasonable price that might otherwise be quite expensive.

    Pu-erh.sk sells a 2011 BGT that was a special edition commissioned by Taiwanese Puerh collectors. This is a rock-like lump of the Huangpian from that batch.

    2011 BGT (Huangpian) is a powerful tea in every sense of the expression. Slow to open up even after a couple rinses and a bit of time steaming, this gets going around steep 5 or 6. The energy is a lightness in the chest and throat. I felt pretty lightheaded around steep 9. Still feeling and tasting this tea several hours after the last steep.
