  1. “End socialism for private car storage”: How should we pay for street maintenance? An economist offers seven rules that could be summarized as two principles. First, let those who cause the costs bear them. Second, don’t neglect maintenance. Patching streets is a lot cheaper than rebuilding them. cityobservatory.org/how-should #publicworks #localgov

  2. A quotation from Lincoln

The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves — in their separate, and individual capacities. In all that the people can individually do as well for themselves, government ought not to interfere.
The desirable things which the individuals of a people can not do, or can not well do, for themselves, fall into two classes: those which have relation to wrongs, and those which have not. Each of these branch off into an infinite variety of subdivisions. The first — that in relation to wrongs — embraces all crimes, misdemeanors, and non-performance of contracts. The other embraces all which, in its nature, and without wrong, requires combined action, as public roads and highways, public schools, charities, pauperism, orphanage, estates of the deceased, and the machinery of government itself.
From this it appears that if all men were just, there still would be some, though not so much, need of government.

Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) American lawyer, politician, US President (1861-65)
    Speech (1854-07-01?), fragment on government

  8. Book of the Week: “The Big Dig” isn’t actually a book; it’s a nine-part documentary podcast by GBH in Boston about one of the most ambitious—and vexed—public works projects in U.S. history. In the end, this tunnels-and-bridge project transformed Boston’s downtown, but few recognize its value today because of the Big Dig’s runaway costs. The podcast explains all. atlantaurbanist.com/book/the-b #publicworks

  11. With high winds continuing and more rain on the way, the city’s Public Works team has been super busy over the holiday. Please report downed trees or other hazards you see at toaks.gov/service.

And if you see one of the crews out in white city vehicles, I’m sure they’d appreciate a word of thanks!

  15. Internalize the externalities: The term for activities or products that, while legal, cause damage to others is “negative externalities.” One that drives #publicworks managers to tears today is … baby wipes. Here’s an idea: Tax the wipes for their annual damage to sewers, then let companies selling them figure out how to reduce their impact … and lower the tax. denverite.com/2025/11/28/denve

  17. How would you turn around Oakland CA’s plague of illegal dumping? Sure, some of the trash on streets comes from outsiders or commercial haulers. But most comes from citizens who have grown used to putting old sofas and household trash on the street. Your challenge: Convince citizens to replace bad habits with good ones. nytimes.com/2025/10/08/us/oakl #publicworks

  21. When the city’s Public Works Department does something, it does it right – and so it was with the retirement party yesterday for outgoing director and noted baseball fan Cliff Finley.

Using funds from coworkers, staff decorated the Kavli Theater’s Founders Room to look like Dodger Stadium, and even presented Cliff with a bobblehead doll.

Every TO resident has benefited from Cliff’s 13-year tenure with the city, not only from our excellent infrastructure but also from the deep bench of excellent players he put together. I’m reassured that longtime deputy @naderhey will succeed Cliff as director, and wish Cliff and family a very happy retirement. On behalf of a grateful city, thank you!
