When Mother Nature Calls, Does Your City Answer?
Results from a fascinating and important study of public restroom availability in the United States and elsewhere is depicted below. This weblink provides access to information from a number of cities worldwide.
Public restroom in San Francisco – Source: outdoordesign.com.auThe chart below shows the enormous variation between American cities. Though their numbers are lower than the top cities worldwide. congratulations to the top 10 American cities:
- Salt Lake City
- Honolulu
- Denver
- Louisville
- Portland (OR)
- Minneapolis
- San Francisco
- Seattle
- Charleston (SC)
- St. Louis
Where exactly do the cities on the bottom half of the chart expect the general public or visitors from out-of-town to go? This is clearly not just a planning or infrastructure issue, but also a public health concern and an issue of urban inequity. Mother Nature doesn’t always provide us with a lengthy pre-notice, especially as the nation’s population ages. Like it or not, in some instances the lack of adequate public restrooms can and will lead to messes being left on sidewalks, streets, parks, and elsewhere.
Is that what cities with poor public restroom access really want? Philadelphia, for one, is striving to improve its public toilet access options with its “Philly Phlush” program (gotta love the name).
Working to add toilet infrastructure with “Philly Phlush” units in Philadelphia – Source: Philly.govAny city wanting to draw tourists, visitors, and local residents to its sights, events, and activities there must provide adequate restroom infrastructure. Port-a-potties only go so far and frankly can become an eyesore over time. Modern public restrooms like those depicted in this post, or properly maintained existing ones, are not just a welcome sight, but also go a long way toward enhancing a city’s overall image.
Furthermore, our nation’s unhoused population deserve dignity too. We cannot claim to be an advanced society and expect the less fortunate to just “hold it in” so to speak. If such facilities are largely unavailable, where exactly are they expected to go? The unhoused are shunned from many private businesses, forced out of parks, and corralled like cattle. Public restrooms are often the one and only option.

Perhaps, the public restroom index will help put pressure on those cities ranking at the lower end of the scale to move quickly towards improving both availability and access to public restrooms. If so, then the index will have gone a long way towards enhancing public infrastructure, correcting a notable lapse of equity, while also taking strides towards protecting public health. Sounds like a win-win-win situation.
Peace!

@babelcarp
I’ve been using a smartphone app called Flush - it’s free, no ads and reportedly has over 200,000 toilets in the database. And you can add more if you find one that’s not already listed. Us old(er) guys appreciate this.

What's some bathroom graffiti you still remember?
Mine are both from high school. One was "Michelle and Devin 4 ever" (or whatever their names were) with the "ever" crossed out in another pen and "like a week lol" written instead. Devastating.
The other was "the coffee poop is real." Truer words have rarely been spoken.

Everyone who uses a public restroom should be prepared to leave the restroom at least, if not more, cleaner than they found it.
As a vanlifer and daily user of public restrooms, it astounds me how filthy normal seeming people are.
Also. Flush. And. Wash. Your. Hands.
