I think you understand me correctly. I look at it like podcasting. That artists should be able to run their own sites using any software they want and host their music there while listeners use any app they want to seemlessly play music from these sites. A decentralized Spotify. of course we also need to get money flowing the other way. #PublicPatron

discovery is also an issue but I don't like anything closed. internet radio and fedi recommendations.

right but eventually we should have a protocol for bank to bank fiat transfers, no longer having to manage multiple intermediaries. same with apps that let us search and listen to music, no matter where they host their music or how. then we merge the two, directly paying an amount we can afford directly to them for percentage of total time spent with their work over a month. etc etc.

I have lots of ideas on how it should work but mostly I let @ryno find it for me and buy whatever I can on Bandcamp Fridays.

[TuneFM Radio is a great internet radio app for Android that keeps track of what songs they played and the #subsonic API lets you play your music from any compatible source (Bandcamp for now). But eventually we do this all (including recommendations from other fedizens) in an even more decentralized way, with money flowing directly to artists. #PublicPatron]

I'm using the FOSS app #substreamer for Android to play all the tracks I've bought from #Bandcamp using the Open #subsonic API. It's awesome.

We should be able to do this with music from any band's website, using any app we choose. Decentralized Spotify. Musicians no longer needing to manage multiple accounts, just their own website.

But for this to work, they've gotta get paid, directly and automatically. Amounts that work for fans and artists.

The bad guys are winning because the decentralized alternatives are not working together very well. The server people with the app developers. We can't even agree on an attention protocol thanks to #bluesky. Ultimately we're all being held back because we don't have a fiat protocol to enable automatic and direct payments of what we can afford to creators for time spent with their work.

AFAICT few even think of their projects as part of an ecosystem.

I think the future is decentralized Spotify via #canimus and #PublicPatron but right now, we should probably try to move everybody (at least those on #Bandcamp) to #mirlo. And help them be the most awesome, including providing musicians fedi accounts.

Not owning digital media wouldn't be a problem if creators could be fully independent and make the files directly available from their own website, and we only paid a reasonable amount for our time spent playing them. Then they'd have a strong incentive to keep them accessible.

Now getting a block on a publication that I used to be able to read using @wallabag. I expected it sooner. More are coming I'm sure.

Of course journalism needs the money but paywalls are counterproductive. Most will just read something else. We all get dumber. Subscriptions frustrate when most of what we want to read is shared from lots of different sites. And paying each time is tedious and feels expensive.

We need to allocate per time spent, based on what we can each afford.

he's great. we need apps (esp OTT) that handle both #owncast and #peertube but look like YT. YT is the obvious future of all video but we can't let one company control it.

we also need a payment system where the money flows automatically and directly based on percentage of time spent, from an amount we choose monthly. our bank to their bank. if we can convince enough people to do that with enough money, we could displace the corporations. #PublicPatron

we need this worldwide. being able to fully integrate direct and automatic payments for media we consume into apps (without the problems of crypto) would free creators from the limits of corporate gatekeepers. the way the money currently works is what keeps people on YT vs #peertube and #owncast, for example. or consider a decentralized alternative to #Spotify. it would open up so many opportunities.

I'm sad to see it ending (mostly thanks to Trump but also costs) while I also wish it could have been live more regularly and less corporate. I dream that #owncast #peertube and #PublicPatron could bring it back in that format.

and that third party should be your own bank. we should decide how much we can give per month and our apps should tell our bank how much time we spent with each item and then divvy up and distribute the money at the end of the month. with all media decentralized ala podcasting and attention democratically determined via fedi boosts.

yes but I don't think coops in the middle solve this either. they become more useful as they get bigger but that gives them more power and they can always eventually abuse that power. or maybe even just do something that only a quarter of the musicians hate. it can't sustain.

instead imo we need less work on competing systems, more work on protocols/APIs, apps and servers. and then a fuckton of advocacy for decentralized fiat.

and let's go further. decentralized media is one third of what I call #DemocracyOfReach, the other two being the social news feed (my perhaps better term for microblogging) and automatic/direct financial support.

anybody should be able to create the content however they want and anybody should be able to consume it however they want, no middleman. then it goes viral based on human boosts. then we pay creators what we can for time spent with it.

I understand how people are coming to think of a podcast as just a talk show. But what's special is the distribution. That no corporation has to be dealt with to make them available to the world. That both creators and consumers have total choice in apps and services. This is already possible with video and getting better with text and music. And with fedi, we don't need them for attention. Next, auto/direct support.

I know YouTube algos are helpful to you but they are ultimately bad for society. help us build and grow alternatives. people are already doing the work, they just need more attention, money and users. please.

we should be able to transfer money directly from a fan's bank to a creator's bank as easily as sending an email or tagging somebody on fedi. no middleman, no crypto. we should be able to decide what we can give per month, track what we consume and automatically divide up and distribute those funds.

Our "paying for media" system is broken because it doesn't account for what is recommended to us via social media.

You can pay a lot of money for lots of services and still not be able to check out the cool new thing all your friends are suddenly talking about. Or still have to sit through ads when you'd rather just pay them directly (but not stack that on top of paying for other stuff you now won't get to this month)

Fans and indie artists get screwed while executives cash in.

I'd love to talk to you about what's possible with decentralized media. People are building alternatives to all the big services and the fedi lets us democratize attention instead of being stuck with what corporate owners, advertisers and algos push. The last piece would be getting independents paid directly, perhaps via amounts we're each comfortable with that gets divvied up based on time spent with their work.

but we're citizens who want the best info and arguments to get to the most people so that our democracy can thrive. we need the nice billionaires to help build that ecosystem, not another outlet they can get bored with or decide isn't worth the time/money. that they have some other interest that might be damaged by somebody upset by the outlet I own.

before the repeal of funding by #MAGA, the US was only giving about $2/person annually. while the UK was giving about $100/person annually.

in general, I don't like government doing it but I do think money needs to be allocated in such a way that keeps our media from being so subservient to the interests of rich people and corporations.

that's the dream of #PublicPatron. displacing all the money we pay for media as a donation directly to creators whose work we consume.

media decentralization is job one in the fight for a workable democracy/economy.

every outlet should be essentially an equal node on a flat network. attention only allocated by social media boosts by humans. money allocated from each of us based on how much we can donate and then divided by the percentage of our time we spend with their work.

fighting it is why I want the fedi to win. media decentralization (ala podcasts etc) solves their control over distribution, while social media decentralization gives us a real alternative to their influence over what gets attention. our boosts let us decide together what goes viral. no corporate ownership decisions over what's available, and no or algos. if we can figure out the funding.

I think #ghost and #wordpress are doing that. to pay creators, I think we need a protocol and then an autopay system based on a monthly amount we are willing to give, distributed based on time with a creator's works.

Building decentralized alternatives is no longer the problem. The struggle is finding a way to handle the money without middlemen. The current systems prove people will pay. I think they can just be asked to, not forced to. If only the systems were as easy to use, especially if they knew much more of it would go to whose work they appreciate.
