Now that we have the Matariki public holiday to enliven early winter, the need for a holiday to relieve the late winter drudge has become even more evident.
I therefore move that we shift King's Birthday to late August.Furthermore, I propose that KB receive the Hot British Dinner mantle so often and so uncomfortably worn by Christmas. Roast meat for the omnivores, a roast veg extravaganza for the vegetarians & vegans, Yorkshire pud and gravy for everyone, with a sweet and stodgy pudding to follow, possibly brandied and on fire for added good cheer.
August KB traditions could also include log fires, mulled drinks, and - in honour of the King's ecological interests - the planting of a tree*, the browsing of a garden catalogue, or suchlike horticultural activity.
*part of my secret campaign to reforest the calendar by making Plant A Tree part of marking every holiday and occasion. Have a baby? Plant a tree on the placenta. Get married? Plant a double-grafted tree. Die? Have a tree planted on your grave. Te Aranga, Matariki, Labour Day, win the lottery, get a great job, ditch a bad job, or vote an unpopular government out of office? That's right - trees.

Tararua district caught between anniversary days
This is why in today's modern world we should do away with anniversary days and merge them into one day celebrated over all Aotearoa --- Let us call it Aotearoa day. What date would you put it on? I was thinking 27 December or May 1st.

I think I've asked this here before, but why do people not know their public holidays anymore?
If you ask me for the date of any of our South African public holidays, I can give it to you straight away off the top of my head. Conversely, too, if you give me a date, I can tell you if there's a holiday on that date and which one.
The only thing I can't do that with straight away are Good Friday and Family Day, because those are movable.
Public Holidays were drummed into me in school, so I also know the historical significance of each one. Don't people learn that stuff anymore? Or do they just not care?

West Aussies, Cookie wants your feedback on changing public holidays to match the eastern states.
Tell him what you think (which of course is that we want more. Apparently we get the least in the country?!)
For purely selfish reasons I'd support celebrating the Kings Birthday in June and moving WA Day, so I can occasionally have a public holiday on my birthday.

Today is the #DayOfGoodwill. Called #BoxingDay is most other countries that celebrate it, the South African government renamed it when they re-did all the public holidays shortly after coming into power in 1994.
Whatever you call it, the idea is that you show a little bit of that goodwill to your fellow human beings today. "Peace on Earth and Goodwill to everyone," as the angels said.
Oh, yes, it's also the Second Day of #Christmas (there are 12, if you'll remember). :-)

Today is when much of #SouthAfrica officially begins their #December holidays. Unless you work in retail, it's more than likely that you're on leave from today (public schools all closed on Friday, and will only reopen on 15 January).
But among all that excitement, let's not forget the purpose of the day: if there's someone you haven't spoken to in a while, and with whom your last interaction left a bad taste in your mouth, why not reach out today? Say you're sorry -- even if it wasn't your fault. Life's too short for grudges.
