Yesterday I was proudly told by a senior academic now a senior researcher at #Google #Deepmind that they are hiring more philosophers and ethicists.

This is a BAD THING. Settingaside teh fact that these are insecure jobs since corporations may change their mind about this direction on a whim, and only have the thinnest veneer of #AcademicFreedom, this is a further example of the privatisation of the #PublicRealm

Urban Geometry at Night

The brutalist architecture of Bishop Lucey Park seems to suit black and white night shots. This was only my first time trying to photograph it in such a way but I’ll try again.

A Sunlit Afternoon on the Wall

This is me standing on the old walls of Cork where I took this photo in Bishop Lucey Park yesterday afternoon. The sun had already started to head to the horizon and it wasn’t even 3pm, but it did light up the mural on the wall and placed the ground in front of me in shadow.

For many in Ireland, November is firmly in the winter months of the year. It seems to be a traditional Irish/Celtic thing because Met Éireann uses meteorological seasons which classify September, October and November as autumn.

Goodness. Dublin City Council thinks it can prohibit protests in parks. (Don't get me started on "requests" and "refusals" for "protests" taking place, my god.) Though, by all means, if Council officials want every protest to take place on public carriageways, they can work away.

FYI anyone in Dublin 7:

Prussia Street is a no-go area for anyone using a wheelchair, mobility scooter, or similar.

Due to unlawful practices by construction workers, both footpaths are fully obstructed.

Dublin City Council is aware and failing to enforce.

Why are these steps and seating in the #PublicRealm at Kent Station, adjacent to #TheDean Hotel, still closed three years after completion? The steps connect the Lower Glanmire Road to Railway Street, giving access to the bus stops and south entrance to the railway station. The design includes tiered seating, planters and trees, all inaccessible to the public.

Does your city really want to attract and keep families living in your downtown and urban places? REALLY?

Remember, there are 3 KEYS, in THIS ORDER:

1) ensure family-sized housing (2-3+ bedrooms);
2) build local daycare, schools & supports;
3) design the #publicrealm for kids.

Boushey Square annoys me every summer. This "public" square is leased by a restaurant that only uses it for dinner service and it remains chained off the rest of the day.

Closed to cars and yet still closed to people. May as well stay parking and through way. #Ottawa #Patio #PrivatePublicSpace #Privatized #PublicRealm #PlacesForProfit

This is quite clever. Bollards at a crossing in Santiago de Compostela, both marking the division between road and pavement but with lights on the top that turn green or red along with the pedestrian crossing lights. #transport #pedestrians #PublicRealm

Dubliners!

Proposal for 100m stretch of street furniture on South Great George's Street, from Diwali to The George.

I've emailed an objection to this the Council.

My main reasons are that it effectively renders the footpath unusable to disabled people. (I haven't included the privatisation of public space, but absolutely fck that noise, too.)

I've a version here, in case anyone is looking for ideas (deadline is today):

Let's do #Introductions! 👋

We're a Dublin-based initiative, bringing women in Dublin together each month for an inclusive cycle around the city. 🚲

Above all, these are social events, with the added bonuses of exploring the city, sharing experiences, exchanging tips, and (very importantly) enjoying cake. 🍰
