  1. Up on the tops today. The snow is leaving and the locals are getting their summer coats out #CairngormsNP #Scotland #Ptarmigan #MountainHare

  2. More ptarmigan from a couple of days ago. The first two shots are of males with the third being a female. The red comb over the eye is the indicator as to the gender #Lochnagar #Cairngorms #Scotland #Ptarmigan

  3. Blustery, wet and feeling more like the end of September than August today up on Lochnagar. Plenty of young ptarmigan around and even the company of a snow bunting made it worthwhile #Cairngorms #Lochnagar #Ptarmigan #SnowBunting #Scotland

  4. This is the first #ptarmigan I've ever seen in the wild. I saw it in Iceland almost ten years ago. It was May and I think it's the time of year #ptarmigans are transitioning their plumage from the white, winter one to the darker, summer plumage. This ptarmigan is a male as indicated by the red eyebrow. Apparently ptarmigan is the traditional Christmas dinner in #Iceland.

  9. Not every photo I post will have a story, but this is one of my favourites because of the story.
I had walked up a quiet part of #Cairngorm with my family, hoping to see Rock #Ptarmigan (Logopus mutus). At the head of the corrie we stopped to look and listen. It was May and we heard then saw a male calling. He was about 50m in front, then we noticed a female about 30m behind us, looking interested. I took some photos and then we settled to eat our lunch and see what happened...
