  1. This is one of those pieces that took time to settle before I could write it.
It gathered—quietly—until it began to take shape.

This essay lives somewhere between structure and fragility,
between a world that holds together
and a self that must learn to affirm it anyway.

    Fechner. Tillich.
Two ways of thinking unity—one serene, one trembling.

    More in the link above.

  2. I didn't know that October 22 was "Fechner Day" (the founder of psychophysics)

If you don't know who Gustav Fechner is, you can read more about him here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustav_F

  3. If you're near Besançon and interested in auditory science or psychophysics, check out this upcoming series of talks at the FEMTO-ST Institute neuro-team-femto.github.io/rev
I'll be giving one of them, looking forward to great discussions!

  4. Worked on improving camera recordings in PsychoPy today. Some of the optimizations I made to movie player are now being applied to the camera interface with excellent results

  5. I finally got to work on a prototype for the audio/visual synchronization tester I designed a few years back

This device is used to measure the lag between the presentation of a visual stimulus on screen and a sound that's associated with it

This design will be open sourced and uses widely available components

  6. I bought loads of capacitors for work and I still don't have the right value for this project I'm starting :/

The project is a tone detector module for a device which measures audio/visual/input lag on computers used for psychophysics experiments. It also allows us to benchmark software techniques that correct for synchronization errors

  7. Is there anything that neuroscientists can say (preferably do, study) to know/boost what the human brain can *learn* to do with sound-guided mental imagery as in youtube.com/watch?v=7jFJ_IXzwK ? From #psychophysics to #neuroscience and back; mental imagery training in #BCI #NeuroTech

  9. We are the *Laboratoire des Systèmes Perceptifs*, a research unit located at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris and attached to @cnrs. We are interested in #visual and #auditory perception, from behavioural, computational, and neural perspectives. #intro #introduction

  10. Crossmodal correspondence of elevation/pitch and size/pitch is driven by real-world features link.springer.com/article/10.3 The vOICe sensory substitution uses pitch (tone frequency) to encode elevation; #crossmodal #multisensory #perception #psychophysics

  11. To all scientists out there: I'd like to have your insight on a terminology issue in my field (#psychology #psychophysics).
The problem is the following: we have a type of experiment that is called a "forced-choice task". This name was coined very early on (in the 60's). However it turns out to be very confusing as many researchers in the field believe that it refers to any experiment where participants are "forced to choose" between predefined answers. [1/2]

  12. I had two side gigs in grad school: Converting figures from old journals to vector format, and making PCBs for various labs on campus. The last one is really odd for a psychologist now that I think of it, but electronics and machining are surprisingly useful skills to have as a psychophysics researcher

  13. Dear editors of #DiamondOpenAccess journals,

    I'm more than available as a reviewer for the topics of #EEG #Decision #psychophysics #chronometry #EMG

I would also be ready to do public post-print reviews for initiatives such as Open Research Europe.

  14. Psychophysics moment: I was making kebab and there was leftover seasoning in the packet. I was considering to add the remainder, but my mind went: "Don't bother, adding it will likely be below the JND threshold for spiciness on an already elevated noise floor due to the green chilies."

Cool, open-access science article about perfect pitch, and about
    EARWORMS
from the mag "Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics"

Well, I pretty dramatically over-emphasized earworms. But it is cool.

  16. Choice enhances touch pleasantness
    Gorman et al., 2024 AP&P

"Before and during touching, pupillometry was used to measure the level of arousal. ... Regardless of how relevant it is to the actual tactile stimulus, allowing one to choose may positively enhance a person’s perception of the physical contact they receive."

  17. Application of JNDs to meta-science. Very sensible!

"For example, in clinical settings researchers may specify this smallest effect size of interest as the smallest difference in a health condition that patients themselves notice...this practice has been used at least since the advent of psychophysics in the second half of the 19th century"

  18. I came across some interesting pictures from grad school about 10 years ago

These are photos of a machine I (mostly) designed and built to study depth perception in physical environments

  20. I wonder if my undergrad thesis ever got a follow up. It was a study to characterize the noise floor of brain circuits responsible for the perception of lighting direction in 3D scenes (Dr. Murray's lab at the CVR in 2008)

Anyone out there familiar with recent developments in this topic?

  21. The Centre for Vision Research (CVR) at York University is hosting their annual 'CVR-VISTA Vision Science Summer School' program for undergraduates considering graduate studies in vision science

I attended it back in 2009 and it was well worth the experience, more info here:

  22. I just finished reading "Detection Theory, A User's Guide" authored by Hautus, Macmillan, & Creelman. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to any scientist working on #psychophysics, #perception -- or in fact #psychology at large as the concepts of Signal Detection Theory are often overlooked by some subfields of social psychology or psycholinguistics. (1/2)

  23. Something cool I came across in the hardware lab. A BBTK that was gifted to us here a while back. This one is a bit old and uses a parallel interface. I'm considering building an interface for its sensor modules that can hook up to the oscilloscope for timing assessments

The circuitry in the control unit is (almost) all 7400 series chips

  24. How well can we measure, map, decode, and interpret brain activity? It depends on lots of factors. Dr. @russpoldrack explains in four short videos:

    1. Measuring Brain Function
    2. Mapping Mind to Brain
    3. Brain Decoding
    4. Interpreting Human Neuroscience Data

  25. Anyone know of any inexpensive color calibration hardware for lightsources/monitors? The CRS ColorCal MKII is discontinued and I need something like it

Bonus for no proprietary libraries or software

#epistemologie #psychophysics #psychophysique #Perception

  27. Setting up some awesome precision eye tracking hardware at work. You can see the compensatory eye movements (as transients on the rising/falling edge of the lines) at the end of the saccades on this plot which is cool
