Wotts – he spoke with conviction
Wotts are back with another marvelous composition that will immediately resonate with anyone looking for calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal music. “he spoke with conviction” is their latest standalone single, arriving after many works released this year, further positioning Wotts’ position as one of the greatest contemporary indie pop duos you could stumble upon nowadays. It’s also their second single from COPE, their upcoming extended play slated for release early 2026. Inspired by the hazy psychedelic pop like Tame Impala and Pond, the duo expands their sound beyond modern indie pop specter and steps further into an expansive sonic universe, offering a luxuriant, complex, ethereal, beautiful soundscapes that immediately transport you into another realm. Besides fundamental elements of already mentioned psychedelic pop and indie pop, the band also incorporates some of the finest properties of indie rock, alternative, and dream pop, making this fine piece of sonic artistry even more pleasant to the ears.
Wotts’ experience, knowledge, creativity, skills, and talent are on full display here, as these highly skilled musicians poured heart and soul into each vocal harmony, orchestration, and rhythmic maneuver. They tried something new and elevated their songwriting, composing, arranging, and producing on an entirely new level, proving that even the longstanding music genres like indie pop can still sound fresh, unique, innovative, and exciting. One of the first things you’ll notice is how guitars work here. They seem the same, but different at the same time. Wotts kept those calm instrumentations, with lush, jangly, angular chord progressions swirling and resonating all around and shaping a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon. However, beside all those clean and polished orchestrations, the band also incorporate more abrasive, reverby, echoic riffs, infusing psych, garage, grunge, and alternative elements onto a solid indie pop foundation. You’ll notice how Wotts gradually shifts from those clean notes to more abrasive, raw yet calm riffs. Everything’s so carefully, thoughtfully, and wisely recorded to satisfy even the pickiest listeners, proving that the band thought about everything while working on this song.

The duo knows how to balance instruments and merge them to perfection, without straying from the path. The drumming performance is another standout feature of this composition, with all those wisely arranged, flawlessly performed, and well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics keeping everything in line while dictating tremendous groove and moderate pace. Still, Wotts’ trademark vocal harmonies are a centerpiece here, elevating everything to new heights, commanding attention, and guiding listeners through each segment. These vocal maneuvers contribute emotional depth and complexity through soulful, passionate, sincere, confident, and powerful performance. You’ll notice how each vocal line decorated segments and orchestrations, emphasizing everything these experienced musicans intended to achieve with their latest composition.
By blending some of the finest properties of psychedelic and indie pop, Wotts have created another marvelous composition that will resonate not only with the fans of these genres, but anyone who appreciates tastefully assembled and flawlessy performed music. 1969 Canada pressingI found this record in a thrift store around 2007 when I first moved to B.C..
I had never heard of them before, so I took a gamble.They were a Canadian band from Toronto, and Aardvark contains wistful, breezy, #psychedelic pop songs.
Couple odd facts about the personnel here:
There’s some occasional keyboard here played by Jon Mills-Cockell, who is better known for his role in the more well-known Canadian band Syrinx.
And oddly, drummer Jimmy Watson is Van Morrison’s cousin.With the exception of “Dorian” (which pushes nearly 7 minutes), all these songs are around 3 minutes or less, making for an enjoyable, compact listen of #60s #Psych Canadiana.

I've talked about King Dick on here before, which is the project of brilliant Belgian multi-instrumentalist and singer Wim De Busser. He's been releasing singles from an upcoming LP that should be coming later this year, and the singles are great, but most of his older recordings are a bit rough. So thankfully he re-recorded some of his older songs and released this fucking KILLER record with them on it in 2021 -- Hit Box 21.
Help, can't stop listening. 😂 I listen to this DAILY, no joke, at least once. Literally. These are some wild psych-pop songs. Whew. And I still hear new things every time I listen. FFO maybe Velvet Underground, Beatles, Zombies, etc.

This week's #MusicWomenWednesday is the great new record 'Look Familiar' from last year (another I almost missed) by Australia's indie rock collab THE GREEN CHILD. Raven Mahon's voice is killer through these tracks of psych, electronica and rock. Partway through the first song, the feel almost shifts, the second song has vibes of The Cars, synth lines, cool guitar work. Also a Stereolab or Kraftwerk feel sometimes, too- but this rocks harder than either. This album is rad as fuck. A must hear.
