"One of America's largest unions is taking aim at President Donald Trump's administration for shutting down access to affordable student loan repayment plans -- saying the decision is 'effectively breaking' the system.
"The American Federation of Teachers (#AFT), representing 1.8 million educators across the country, filed a lawsuit against the #DepartmentOfEducation in Washington, D.C., hoping to restore the programs that have now been shuttered for three weeks.
"The filing alleges the administration halting the application process for all Income-Driven Repayment (#IDR) plans and ordering student loan servicers to stop all processing violates #FederalLaw.
"AFT sued the United States Department of Education (ED) for effectively breaking the student loan system, denying borrowers' access to affordable loan payments and blocking progress towards Public Service Loan Forgiveness (#PSLF), in violation of federal law,' the union said in a statement Wednesday."

tl;dr--The student loan servicers are corrupt, ripping off former students, me included. Democrats are trying to fix it and provide some overall relief, quickly and untargeted, but Republicans and their allies on the bench are blocking the effort, and Millennials that know this are *pissed off*. 17/17

Just got a letter from #DeptEd that says (despite news reports to the contrary) that the new administrative forbearance for #studentloans will count towards #PSLF and IDR forgiveness credits. That's at least a sliver of good news in the midst of a lot of bad news.

The plan's architects propose ending all "time-based and occupation-based student loan forgiveness."
That includes the Public Service Loan Forgiveness ( #PSLF ) program, which allows public employees, such as teachers, firefighters, members of law enforcement, and people who work for nonprofit organizations, to apply for forgiveness after they make 10 years' worth of payments.
Biden's loan forgiveness efforts would be repealed, though Project 2025 does not specify if or how that would affect the over 4 million borrowers who have already been approved for forgiveness.
Context: Republicans have cast Biden's cancellation effort as an unconstitutional giveaway and have fought to have his signature debt relief program overturned by the courts.
🔥Defunding public broadcasting
Project 2025 calls for defunding the Corporation for Public Broadcasting ( #CPB ), which has long been a Republican target.
Its $500 million annual appropriation from the government helps support over 1,500 locally controlled and operated public television and radio stations that ensure Americans have universal access to free non-commercial, local public media.
Defunding CPB "would severely diminish, if not destroy, public broadcasting service in the United States," according to consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton in a 2017 report,
which added that "noncommercial radio and television stations in many localities would struggle to survive."🔥Banning adult entertainment
Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation, writes in Project 2025's foreword:
"Pornography should be outlawed. The people who produce and distribute it should be imprisoned."Roberts also calls for telecommunications companies that distribute porn to "be shuttered."
"It has no claim to First Amendment protection," Roberts writes of adult entertainment.
Reality check: Prohibiting porn would challenge decades of free speech precedent.
Courts, including the Supreme Court, have long held that adult entertainment is protected by the First Amendment so long as children are not involved
and it is not obscene as defined by the Miller test, according to the Department of Justice.[2/2]

Depending on which paperwork from #MOHELA is valid, I either should have had around 1.5 years of payments as of last November or I still need to make 8 years worth of payments. I have been working in public sector since 2012.

OK, after a lot of back-and-forth, they finally agreed to re-process the paperwork I (properly re-) submitted in December to fix their previous Consolidation screw up. They also agree to put in a administrative forbearance through May to give them time to process the paperwork and count that time toward PSLF.
I advised that my payment count has dropped since consolidating and that I would be checking in *after* the SAVE/IDR mess is finally cleared up.

I was on hold for an hour and was told the reason my student loans did not get forgiven yet is because someone on their end made an error when processing my paperwork. They said it's going to take 2-5 days to fix the error. Finger crossed my loans will get forgiven this week! I'm going to cry!!! :bunhdcry: #StudentLoans #PSLF #PublicService #HealthCareWorker

I play the long game! I have always been zeroing in on the goal for #PSLF.
PSLF forgiveness should work in stages like #PerkinsLoans and that is my only complaint since they got rid of the corrupt and inept #FedLoanServicing #MyFedLoan and their shady deceitful stall tactics.

Don't remember if I mentioned this here on not (pretty sure I didn't), but ...
my remaining student loan balance was forgiven under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program!
Been teaching / working in USA #k12 for 13-ish years now; made 10 years of payment; remaining balance was forgiven.
Whatever your thoughts on Biden's $10/20 thousand forgiveness, #PSLF rewards public service, which is a good thing.
