Le Bon plaisir de Francis Girod
Françoise Giroud, née à Lausanne Léa France Gourdji, est une journaliste politique très au fait des événements, vice-présidente du Parti radical et de l’UDF, puis deux fois secrétaire d’État sous Giscard d’Estaing (et mère de Caroline Eliacheff). Elle publie en 1983 un roman à clef (aux Éditions Mazarine…) – bien qu’elle ait démenti – intitulé Le bon plaisir (ou e-book Kindle). Le film en est tiré par le producteur Marin Karmitz, beau-fils de Françoise Giroud, au moment où la rumeur commençait à se répandre (dans les milieux bien informés) que le président Mitterrand avait une fille cachée. Mazarine ne sera sortie du bois qu’en 1994, elle avait l’âge du fils dans le film sorti en 1983. Donc « on » savait. Toute la presse, toute l’élite. Mais l’omerta a joué à plein, par révérence envers Tonton, le socialiste issu de l’extrême-droite, que tout le monde craignait durant son règne, ne le surnommant pas moins que « Dieu ». Naturellement, « toute ressemblance, etc… » Mais les initiés rient sous cape.
Le président (Jean-Louis Trintignant) n’est pas socialiste dans le film de Francis Girod tiré de Françoise Giroud (l’homonymie est amusante), mais d’un centrisme autoritaire très mitterrandien. Il est surnommé Castor. Il a pour « ami de trente ans » son ministre de l’Intérieur (Michel Serrault), donc surnommé Pollux, en référence aux fils jumeaux de Zeus (mais aussi un clin d’œil aux intellos révérés d’époque, Sartre et au Castor, Beauvoir, « beaver » en anglais). Pollux est chargé des sales besognes (écoutes téléphoniques, filatures, arrestations d’État, surveillance des menaces sur la vie privée de la Présidence) – une longue liste sous Mitterrand. Tel est le bon plaisir.
Un autre plaisir a été d’avoir couché avec la belle Claire Després (Catherine Deneuve) et de lui avoir fait un enfant. Mais le président n’aime pas les enfants, il en témoigne à chaque cérémonie officielle dans les pays de l’Est, qui envoient toujours de très jeunes filles en hommage aux grands de ce monde. Sa Première Dame est stérile et cela lui convient. Cependant, lorsqu’il apprend par son ministre qu’une certaine lettre envoyée à Claire dix ans auparavant a été volée, il s’intéresse à ses conséquences.
L’une d’elle, plus que sa réputation, est cet enfant caché, que sa maîtresse a eu malgré son refus, cause de sa rupture avec elle. C’est un fils, Mike (Matthew Pillsbury), il vit chez des amis aux États-Unis, où il est né. Il a donc un passeport américain. Dès lors, il n’aura qu’une préoccupation : rencontrer ce fils et éviter le scandale.
Le vol a eu lieu un soir à Paris dans la rue Hallé (14e arrondissement), alors que Claire rentrait chez elle. C’est un jeune homme de 22 ans, Pierre (Hippolyte Girardot, 28 ans au tournage, mais juvénile), qui vois la vieille et lui pique son sac, comme chantaitLa salsa du démon interprétée par Le Grand Orchestre du Splendid en 1980. Il trouve surtout 5000 francs pour épater sa copine. Las ! Elle l’a plaquée. Il cherche alors un petit boulot de traduction, puisqu’il parle allemand couramment. Pour cela, il contacte Herbert (Michel Auclair), journaliste, qui est séduit par son teint frais, son col très ouvert et sa bouille enfantine. Accessoirement, Pierre lui montre le portefeuille cuir trouvé dans le sac, et la lettre cachée.
Herbert sent qu’il peut s’agir d’un brûlot explosif, un bon scandale de la République, puisqu’elle révèle en filigrane l’existence d’un fils caché. Problème, elle n’est pas signée, seule l’écriture peut faire penser à celle de celui devenu président. Il la garde donc sous le coude (et dans un coffre), jusqu’à ce que Pierre, désintéressé de la politique, la lui reprenne pour la rendre à Claire, une belle femme pour laquelle il ressent un certain goût. Elle l’impressionne, elle a un fils hardi, elle lui rappelle sa mère.
Mais la machine d’État est lancée. Le ministre de l’Intérieur a mis Claire sur écoutes et fait surveiller la maison. Le jeune homme est intercepté lorsqu’il ressort dans la rue, bien que Claire lui ait assuré qu’il ne risquait rien. Il se débat, s’enfuit, termine bousillé sur une Peugeot 505 qui arrivait dans la rue. Mort pour Raison d’État. Herbert, mis en cause pour avoir tenté de publier la lettre, atterré par la mort du jeune homme dont il était tombé amoureux, se suicide. Tout un gâchis pour un mensonge.
Pendant ce temps, le président a fait connaissance du gamin, a jugé de son caractère, qui tient du sien ; il a avoué à sa Première Dame son fils caché. Il ne lui restera qu’à le reconnaître et à lui envisager un avenir, mais après la fin de son mandat. Claire, sa mère, a dit à Mike qu’il ne saurait qui est son père que lorsqu’il aura 14 ans.
Un bon film d’atmosphère, policier de surcroît, avec une brochette d’acteurs et d’actrices sensationnelle. A revoir pour l’ambiance d’époque, cette royauté républicaine du ténor socialiste et ses cachotteries hors d’âge. On prêtera à Jacques Chirac un fils caché en 2003, dont on n’a jamais vu l’ombre. Ni Hollande, ni Macron, n’auront cet honneur. C’est passé de mode, l’époque n’aime plus les enfants.
