Finally got into some wilderness and recalibrated my brain. Started in evergreen forest, uphill into beech forest, down between dunes covered in beech, out into the open dunes, to a bog where I spent 20 mins harvesting cranberries, then back along pretty pond. #hiking #NationalSeashore #ProvinceLands #PTown #getoutside

A final #foraging count from one week in the dunes: 1.5 gal (5.6 L) of wild cranberries, but zero, as in not a single beach plum (whereas last year in the same location I harvested 16 lb of beach plums). Reindeer lichen in the dunes. First, the typical colony, in the sand under an oak tree. Then a little closer look and we see that wonderful but strange green color. Finally, very close, it looks extraterrestrial, and wow, there are little purple dots deep inside that colony. #lichen #dunes #ProvinceLands #PtownArtists #GetOutside

Ok, no cranberries this afternoon because my favorite bog was flooded. But, I spotted beach plum drops, all dried, of course, but where there are drops, it is worth a closer look.
left picture: the terrible, pitiful plants that had fruit
middle picture: descent plums still on very scrubby plants
right picture: 795 cleaned beach plums as a total harvest today! So very happy!

You all know that I #forage, and today's hike was to get cranberries from a bog that has been dependable over the years, perhaps because not many journey there. So,
left picture: down that road, around a curve, over a slight hill, then straight on towards sunrise, there is an oasis with a cranberry bog.
right picture: oh my, yes, the water table is shallow here, but goodness.....this puddle is actually outflow from my oasis, which is completely flooded and no cranberries.

First foraging outing for cranberries. For ease of access, we went to the bog that apparently *Everyone* knows about and picks over. We still managed a small amount in 25 mins. From my hike in the dunes today, a panorama view with the Atlantic behind me. Race Point Coast Guard Station is on the left, Pilgrim Tower that is in center of PTown is visible, and off to the right is Race Point Light.
Went looking for beach plums and tarantulas, but found none of either. So, spent time collecting photos of some of the colors of the dunes which will get posted to this thread.

Foraged in the dunes for several hours, Herring Cove to Race Point. Blue skies, moderate temps, sea breeze, birds, and solitude. The only thing missing? Beach plums - this may be another of those years when there just aren't any. However, I know other places to check, and more than once, I've found a bush loaded with several pounds of fruit. #hiking #foraging #BeachPlums #cranberries #ProvinceLands

Yes, it looks desolate but there is a plethora of life out there in the Province Lands. The dunes hold many secrets for those that venture out of the car and off the path. This particular view is of a valley that contains the largest cranberry bog that I've ever known, irregularly running the width of the valley for more than 2 miles.
