What are you proud of?

What am I proud of, huh? What about that whole pride going before a fall thing? I might not be full of faith, but I can make up for it in superstition. So if not what I’m proud of, then what do I talk about now?
The things I’m not proud of? No, too easy.
I’ve known some prideful and boastful people in my life and you know what? I don’t know that any of them were overly interesting people. Or caring and compassionate people. How can you be a caring person if all you talk about is yourself? I think we’re all somewhat guilty of talking about ourselves though. It’s natural, it’s what we know well, and it’s also a pretty safe topic if you’re not a great conversationalist, but at some point doesn’t the other person, the other half of the conversation sitting over there, become interested in something else?
Wouldn’t conversations be a lot simpler if we all had telepathy and could just read other’s thoughts instead of talking to them?
I found three old flash drives today and spent some time looking at stuff I had saved. I was surprised to find a folder filled with a bunch of things I’d written going back to 2010. There was a story I’d written about my grandfather who died when he was 78-years-old and that was sad. I also found a lot of poems I’d written and one of them was a poem I wrote on my birthday. I remember sharing it at the time in an online writing group and I remember everyone telling me – very nicely, all of them – how it didn’t make sense and it was confusing and other stuff I didn’t care to read. It made sense to me back then and it still made sense to me today but I can see why it failed. I’m thinking with some work I can maybe make it make sense to others? We’ll see.
I also found a bunch of pictures on one of the flash drives and that was pretty cool. I’ve really changed a lot in the last 16 years. I wonder what I’ll look like at 78?

I was sorry to hear that Penelope Keith has died.
Many people will remember her as Margo in The Good Life, but for me it was To the Manor Born.
Audrey fforbes-Hamilton could have been unbearable in the wrong hands. Proud, snobbish, stubborn, ridiculous.
But Penelope Keith made her human.
She had that rare comic gift of being completely precise without becoming cold. Every look, every pause, every lifted eyebrow seemed to know exactly where it belonged.
She was only sixteen years older than me, which feels close now.
When I was young, eighty-six sounded like another country. Now it feels like someone a little further down the same road has quietly stepped out of sight.
She made dignity funny.
She made fussiness magnificent.
A proper actress.

🏳️🌈 My small town's first Pride had over 1600 attendees. We have a population of 23,000 & we call ourselves The #Cowboy Capital of the World.
It was full of joyous, supportive people. Eye contact & smiles in every direction. I hit my "people" limit very quickly.
Full disclosure, I've been a nervous wreck in the weeks leading up to #Pride. There was plenty of loud, venomous, coordinated pushback. I needn't have worried.
I'm so #proud of my community rn. 🩷🩷🩷🏳️🌈

“I’m positive. Just tell me where it’s safe to appear. The Lord will take care of the rest,” I said.
“We have secured a room for you at Michael's Inn just outside the fortress gates. The guards you met yesterday await you there. I pray St. George and the Theotokos guard you.”
Kneeling, I let Georgina bless me. I wasn’t too #proud to accept any help that was offered. This included divine or supernatural aid. I had seen enough to believe in its existence.
“May the Lord and all the apostles protect you from the Evil One,” she finished.
Still on my knees, I asked, “When am I expected?”
“Before the sun reaches its zenith. That’s when the conclave begins.”
I nodded, took Emily’s hand, and wished, “Take me to the room at Michael’s Inn where the Coptic guards await me, an hour before noon.”
The ground grew soft under me, and the monks' faces blurred and then vanished.

Coming home last night I managed a 4 minute platform-to-platform transfer from #Eurostar to #SouthEastern at #StPancras (I might have ran…) which got me home an hour earlier than planned.
Even managed to say a friendly "Hello" to the very bored looking customs people in the way out of Eurostar before legging it up the station.

Yesterday, I was batting with my eldest from his 80 runs into the 100. Father's day came early this year. On top of that my second son made a hard fought 50 on the adjacent pitch in a hoofdklasse game. #usvhercules #proud #cricket

Somehow, only 35 minutes later (not too far behind my husband and with some extra encouragement from kind strangers) I finally made it! Of course I had also hurt my knee the week before and it was not happy at this point, but I absolutely wanted to prove that I could do this. The way back down was even harder on my knee so I'm going to have to take it very slowly the next week or so. But I DID IT GUYS! 💪
