    On July 4th 1871, a Yale College Scientific Expedition, close to Fort Wallace, found the first specimen. Sadly this fossil was never described or named.

    About 5 months later, E. D. Cope found and collected the first identified specimen in the Kansas chalk.

    In 1872, E. D. Cope named the specimen Protostega gigas.

    Several almost complete examples have been found, showing this animal was up to 14 feet long.
