#Luther was part of an academic movement which took issue with the excesses in the RCC. He wrote his 95 Theses as a way air his grievances.
He wasn't the only person who had been writing against issues in the Church and was part of a longer, larger movement (looking at John #Wycliffe and Jan #Hus especially!), but he became a leader of the movement and inspired others to write, share, preach.
