"The next time you’re scrolling your phone, take a moment to appreciate the feat: The seemingly mundane act is possible thanks to the coordination of 34 muscles, 27 joints, and over 100 tendons and ligaments in your hand. Indeed, our hands are the most nimble parts of our bodies. Mimicking their many nuanced gestures has been a longstanding challenge in robotics and virtual reality."

  4. 🌟 A beautiful step forward for prosthetics!

New research shows how tiny changes in the way prosthetic legs are designed and controlled can make them feel and move much more like natural limbs. Users report better balance, smoother walking, and a stronger sense of connection to the ground.

  15. CW: Food, birthday

Hi all, and thank you for all the birthday wishes!

I'm back from my day out with my mom, and we had a really good time. We hung out at home until about 2 PM, then headed to my ocularist appointment. That went well. I liked the ocularist. She just took impressions of my eye sockets this time and explained the process to us. It'll take several more visits before I actually get new prosthetics. I handled the impressions surprisingly well given my autism, though my eyes were irritated for a while afterward.

After that, we went to an amazing seafood place in San Antonio called Mambo’s Seafood. We had a crab and shrimp boil with crab legs, shrimp, potatoes, and corn. We also ordered rice with meat and vegetables to go with it, plus fried fish bites for an appetizer. I asked for Dr. Pepper to drink, but they didn't have that, so I got Mr. Pibb. I didn't eat the corn since it was a bit spicy and we were trying not to irritate my stomach too much. There was sauce, called Mambo's Sauce, for the crab and shrimp. My mom tried it and said it was way too spicy, so I ate mine plain, which was still very good.

My mom is a pro at cracking crab legs, so she had to help me a few times. I've had crab legs several times in my lifetime, though not nearly as much as my mom. She grew up poor but had family members who ran shrimp boats, so she ate them often. I've never managed to master cracking them, possibly because we only get them a couple times per year at most. It was our first time at Mambo’s, and it definitely didn't disappoint.

Next stop was Starbucks, where I got my usual Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino and a brownie. Then we swung by the grocery store, where my mom picked me up a cake, some flowers, and a few groceries we needed. The cake was chocolate raspberry with chocolate icing and curls. I had a slice with a glass of milk a little while ago, and I'm so full after all that!

I love chocolate, the richer the better. My mom originally wanted to get Tres Leches so she could enjoy some too, but she asked me what I wanted and said if I really wanted chocolate, we could get chocolate. I said I did. When we got home, she tried some and said it was "a little too rich" for her. I'll probably be eating most of the cake myself over the next several days. We often do what we call "breakfast cake" (cake for breakfast) when we have it, so that's probably what I'll have in the morning.

Overall, I had a wonderful birthday and got to spend some quality time with my mom. I probably pigged out more than I should have given my digestive conditions, but I rarely do that, and the food was so good it was worth it.

Now I'm comfy in a nightgown. I think I'm about to go get my dog Squeaker, get him in his kennel, get some water, and then maybe go to bed myself. I hoped I'd feel up to getting some things done after we got home, but all that food made me sleepy, lol, and a day out always wears me out.

  16. How's everyone doing tonight?

I slept most of the day because of pain from #Fibromyalgia and #RheumatoidArthritis, so now I'll probably be up all night. I'm going to try and get some studying done even though my hands hurt. Really hoping the compression gloves I ordered come in soon.

Since college didn’t work out, I've been building my own self-paced curriculum:

Tonight I'm deciding whether to focus on Christian Leaders coursework, coding, or Braille proofreading.

Tomorrow's my 34th birthday. My mom’s taking me out to eat, and later we're visiting a new ocularist to see about prosthetic eyes. My current ones no longer fit and cause pain, so they'll likely need to start me with conformers first. I'm dreading that part, but it’s time. I haven't been refitted for new ones since I was 16, a few months after a surgery to remove my extremely painful right eye.
