Through most public library portals, "set Alert" within ProQuest-Gale newspaper database will email you all new headlines from any number of major newspapers and magazines which click thru to ad-free, full-text versions. An amazing, mostly ignored free service.

One key exception is Financial Times of London (Noam Chomsky's preferred newspaper, fwiw) which delays full-text by 30 days so I keep a shortcut on my phone home screen to a past date on archive.ph From here, I click the top banner and it refreshes to today's headlines which then click thru to full-text stories. Not so bad. The news itself couldn't be worse but...

I understand the concern around #Clarivate #Proquest buying #ERIC database. They might begin to charge for access (However, I have some doubts that they'll do that).

Nevertheless, were there alternatives? Yes, the government should have never defund it, but they did.

And, unless there were any better alternatives of acquisition that I'm unaware of, the buying by Clarivate at least give some expectative that the resource could survive

This is getting worse by the minute. I followed @christof|s hint concerning the reproduction of articles from #DHQ / @DHQuarterly looking for one of my own papers (https://digitalhumanities.org/dhq/vol/16/2/000593/000593.html).

In this case #ProQuest blatantly violates the CC BY-ND license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/) by

- not mentioning the license
- producing a derivative
- not linking to the original

I am very much in favour of @adho.org, as the publisher of @DHQuarterly, following the path outlined by @dingemansemark. I will also log a complaint with #ProQuest through my employer.

PS: I hope #libraries steer clear of this atrocious model. It uses their real need for access against them. If they're desperate enough to buy a subscription, they're letting their desperation lead them into a trap.

Bei casalini gibt's ja sonst immer die Möglichkeit, sich aus dem Quelltext der PDF-Vorschau den Dateinamen der unverschlüsselten PDF zu ziehen. In meinem Fall ist aber jetzt sogar die Vorschau irgendwie kaputt ...

Die UX ist furchtbar und die Einschränkungen in der Nutzung der Medien torpedieren die üblichen Workflows. Da bedaure ich fast, dass die Bücher nur digital lizenziert werden und man die Bücher nicht auch physisch aus der Bibliothek holen kann.

NPR runs ads on their shows for a Cloudflare site (#Proquest). Proquest jails textbooks in the exclusive walled garden of #Cloudflare. Yet NPR’s ad specifically says Proquest is “open to all”. So not only do they falsely advertise something that’s exclusive as inclusive, but you can’t microblog a complaint about this that reaches them b/c they are exclusively on #Twitter (in effect, by neglecting their fedi acct).

The user experience of #ProQuest is terrible. I'm not imaging DRM-free books. Even compared to other online book services like #Oreilly , to use ProQuest is hard and miserable.

If funding and space are allowed, I wish the university libraries could purchase at least one physical copy of these books. More user-friendly and more reliable.

@tofugolem @drcaberry @scerruti Many schools outsource ebooks to a company called #Proquest, which in fact jails the books in the walled garden of Cloudflare. Ebooks in schools are a great way to marginalize and discriminate against some kids (e.g. poor kids & kids who grok privacy). Paper books completely avoid that problem.
