This week I have learned that Malta and Ireland are both using the Single Transferable Vote method in national elections. I knew that e.g. Northern Ireland are doing it, but I was only aware of Australia doing it at the sovereign level.

Mark Trahant’s frank discussion of the election realities in present day US district elections. It’s not fair, but it never was. We’ve known proportional representation is more fair for over 40 years, yet little has been effective in challenging the power of PAC money in campaigns. I would add that grassroots organizing resists continued control of elections by media/consultant strategists and party objections to progressives.

@drgeraint @Cyclist First Past the Post no longer works in favour of either of the two legacy parties, which are currently the two largest parties in #Westminster. Which is why you would think it would be a complete no brainer to legislate for full #ProportionalRepresentation, right now, before the summer recess.

I would bet you anything you like that it won't happen, and that #ReformUKLtd will win a 'landslide' in 2029 on the votes of 20% of the registered electorate.

Lost a bit in the hubbub about Labour losing massively to the Reform UK is this little tidbit:

Wales is using a new proportional representation model!

There are 96 seats in the devolved parliament (Senedd).
There are 16 new constituencies created with six members each.
The 96 seats are allocated by share of the votes for a party, or by votes for an independent candidate.

Scotland already uses a mixed Constituency and Regional member system to get proportional representation in their parliament.

In England these votes are purely municipal/council/mayoral races. I'm not sure if they're proportional, ranked FPTP, or what.

And yet here we are in Canada, too afraid to change to a more democratic system.

Hitler and the Nazis and WWII really should have made every country look at their electoral system and change where necessary. The Allies required Germany to change its electoral system to a form of #proportionalrepresentation in order to prevent another Hitler from taking power.

But, would other countries like the US, Canada, and the UK have changed? All are very vulnerable to autocratic takeover. Too many rich and powerful people standing in the way.
