  1. Very interesting propagation this weekend. Way more NJ than I've ever gotten before in one sitting. And then the two weird long shots to the east & west. Huh. This was all a smattering of 40m, 20m, 17m, 15m, 10m and 6m. Was definitely a fun time!

I'm chasing a new noise source on 80m though that's making the band completely unusable, so that'll give me something to do for the next few weeks. I can't seem to find where it's coming from yet, and have tried walking around with a shortwave radio to see if I can find something specific in the house.

  2. Dendrobium orchids have one of my favorite propagation techniques: you can take a dendrobium "stick" with no roots, set it on the forest floor, forget about it, check it much later, and it might have a keiki!

Some nuance: as you might be able to tell from the video, it's not *completely* on the forest floor. It's balanced across a pot, so it's lifted a bit off the ground. It's also in the shade, and I covered some of the nodes with leaves, to protect from the sun, and encourage it to root. In short, I tried to mimic "a piece of a dendrobium (that lives in a tree) fell off and landed lower in the canopy. Then, over time, leaves and other growth settled around it."

FYI, I didn't invent this technique. I saw it in a YouTube.

  3. Next up. Blooms & buds from plants that I propagated from cuttings & root splitting.

2 different roses - both propagated from Jubilee Hospital gardens cuttings, 3 years ago.
Yucca flower buds - from helping a former neighbour, when I lived in Cedar, split up their overgrown yucca plant. I put several in front of my old place (for future tenants to enjoy) & brought some back to plant here. That was in May of 2019. They just started to flower, this year.

  4. Several coronal mass ejections are expected to impact the Earth within the next 24-48 hours, possibly resulting in significant geomagnetic activity and visible auroras in far southern Victoria and Tasmania during local nighttime hours. Aurora alerts will follow if significant geomagnetic activity actually occurs.

  5. This weekend's haul wasn't too bad for how terrible conditions were. Propagation was pretty horrible, but still managed about 50 contacts. Can the sun please chill out a bit?

  7. Several weeks ago, I’ve made a makeshift greenhouse/coldFrame to propagate plants and germinate grape tomato and some wildflower seeds. It looks like lilac and viburnum cuttings are doing ok so far.

(That’s TristanSparrow on the lemon tree, btw ;)

  8. Few gardening pictures. First one has some cuttings that I struck tonight, from top Thymus sp. Ex. Turkey, Hylotelephium, Savoury and Sedum (Hispanicum or Acre not aureum). Second picture is to illustrate wire mesh that is necessary to prevent Squirrels and co nibbling fruit saplings. Sheffield Fruit Trees (who should establish a Fediverse presence IMO) said on Instagram that they were having Badger issues so having to upgrade barriers. #propagation #satureja #hylotelephium #sedum

  10. HF Propagation Lab

A browser-only teaching instrument for amateur radio operators. It explains what live space-weather numbers suggest, how each band may react, and which ionospheric mechanism is probably doing the work. It is a teaching model, not a substitute for beacons, skimmers, WSPR, or listening on the air.

  11. Propagation so-so, but Atlantic 2000 Radio should be well audible here on Saturday

Radio Atlantic 2000 International is scheduled to transmit on 6070 and 9670 kHz (via Channel 292 in Rohrbach, Germany) on Saturday, April 11, from 08:00 to 09:00 UTC.

6070 kHz should be of at least some use in my place (northwestern Germany), while the 9670 kHz often doesn’t come in well here, possibly because Rohrbach isn’t far enough from here.

The KP index is said to be no problem, currently. On the other hand, the solar flux doesn’t seem to offer too many opportunities this weekend.

I might give DX a try anyway, but safer bets like Atlantic 2000 look like a nice consolation prize on the radio dial, if little else works.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  12. ASWFC PRELIMINARY HF RADIO COMMUNICATIONS WARNING 26/30 ISSUED AT 0049UT/31 MARCH 2026 BY THE AUSTRALIAN SPACE WEATHER FORECASTING CENTRE.

A Coronal Mass Ejection has been observed, and is expected to impact Earth at 31/1600UT +/- 10 hours. Maximum Usable Frequencies are expected to become depressed over the following 72 hours.

DEGRADED HF PROPAGATION CONDITIONS EXPECTED FROM 31 MARCH 2026 TO 02 APRIL 2026
