  1. BBCSO/Oramo review – Turnage’s satisfying and clever Festen Suite makes UK debut
    By Alexandra Coghlan

Royal Albert Hall, LondonThe festering atmosphere of Thomas Vinterberg’s film and its celebrated opera adaptation lingers in this vivid orchestration, a foil to Sibelius’s cathartic second symphony

  16. @losttourist oooh... 'tis the Prog Rock #Proms - I listened to that earlier in the week and it was good fun (although I was not convinced by some of the singing)

Sadly they're following it with an Oasis song which they are oh so proud of... 8-(

  18. Hey poppers. There's no need to rush off and have your tea early tonight as Top of the Pops won't be starting until 9pm this evening.

Of course if you like your music characterised by slightly fewer repetitive beats, you can always stick your telly on to BBC Four at 7pm anyway for a bit of the Proms.

  20. No roleplaying so what's tonight's #BBCProms? Oh, The Unthanks and Friends (bbc.co.uk/events/e33wxj) that'll do... Oh, and a BBC Introducing #Proms (bbc.co.uk/events/eddhj5)...

What do you mean they only seem to be broadcasting Afterlife: Visions of the Beyond (bbc.co.uk/events/epngfx) this evening...

    Boo... Hiss...

(Seriously, when/where are the others being broadcast??)

  21. Monday's Prom sounds interesting. I saw Abel Selaocoe premier his own cello concerto with the Aurora Orchestra in the Edinburgh Festival last year, and was very impressed.

Definitely one to listen on catch up! (I was at a jazz gig on Monday - it is the entity Jazz Festival, after all!)

"BBCPhil/Noseda/ Selaocoe review – a proms concert that was everything the festival does best."

  23. listening to the Baroque Late Night #Proms from yesterday... there's an audience sing along bit

"Sure, we'll do that..." *what the fuck does that mean*

  24. BBCPhil/Noseda/Selaocoe review – a proms concert that was everything the festival does best
    By Alexandra Coghlan

Royal Albert Hall, LondonA programme – Bach, Beethoven and a Jessie Montgomery premiere – that looked odd on paper made perfect sense in the hall, with Abel Selaocoe a mesmerising soloist in Montgomery’s ‘These Righteous Paths’

  25. Listening to last night's #Proms - the key piece is Beethoven's Ninth, but we had a Bach piece and now a new commission which, hearing the introduction, I'm excited for.

  26. Also really enjoying this encore piece.

Tempted to rewind and listen to both again during my journey home...

  27. Listening to the Spanish National Orchestra's #BBCProms #Proms performance from last night and this Bolero is really enjoyable

  28. Spanish National Orchestra/Afkham review – Proms debut sees orchestra’s celebrations kick off early
    By Alexandra Coghlan

Royal Albert Hall, LondonOutgoing chief conductor David Afkham brought Spanish repertoire, castanets and a certain team’s football scarf in a programme heavy with national treasures

  29. Ahhh some lovely cartoon music to finish up... I love the old Looney Toons and Tom and Jerry and the like... Just from this music I can (sort of) picture the action 8-)

I really hope kids today aren't missing out on that...

  30. So, about to listen to The Black Dyke Band Prom...

This is a brass band, not a group of Black Lesbian musicians...

    #Proms #BBCProms

  31. Well, David Baddiel left a bad taste in my mouth "danish gibberish" to describe yodeling on Focus' Hocus Pocus and "English... And Scottish and Welsh and Whatnot" among other comments...

    #Proms #BBCProms

  32. And we're finishing this first half with Tubular Bells which is practically an orchestral piece in itself...

I've been enjoying myself even if I barely recognise most this stuff (I'm not averse to it, obviously, but my Dad is the prog rock fan really)

Actually singing hasn't always been great, but I put that down to age in most cases...

    #BBCProms #proms

  33. EEK! These singers are flat and mis-timing. I pity the people who don't know the originals. (Currently MB's Nights in White Satin is being MURDERED. #Proms

  35. So, we open tonight's Prog Rock Prom with classical piece which comes back via Emerson Lake and Palmer - Fanfare for the Common Man

    Oh, this is fun 8-)

We have someone from Van De Graff Generator on the show too... I went to school (a year or two behind) the son of someone from VdGG (I think I have that right)

  36. Nooo football and Oasis infiltrating my First Night of the Proms...

And it was going so well...

    #proms #bbcproms

  37. Disappointingly, as I am not well versed in Brass Band lore, the "Black Dyke Band" Prom tomorrow is not what I was expecting...

Might still catch it (but then again, it includes the wrong Hedwig's Theme)

Enjoying this piano stuff on first night with my breakfast though 8-)

  38. And, of course, The Last Night of the Proms (12th September)

But there's loads of others looking interesting including some of the International orchestras...

In the meantime I'm working out which hashtag we're congregating on

  40. The #BBCProms started last night - I'm about to watch the First Night opening concert from last night, and will dip in and out of other things as I feel and have the time.

But am particularly excited by a few -
    * Prog Rock - tonight (dunno when being broadcast yet)
    * The Unthanks and friends (including Villagers) with the Northern Sinfonia on Thursday ("for later broadcast" whatever that means)
    * Bond and Beyond - 25th August
    * Alan Menken's Music for Disney on 31st August

  42. First Night of the Proms review – 250th anniversary of US independence takes centre stage

    By Tom Service

The world’s biggest classical music festival begins on Friday. Over eight weeks of sonic excursions and orchestral revelations there’s a huge range of premieres and contemporary music: here’s the concerts I won’t be missing

  50. A one for Private Eye. I've just been watching a repeat of The Last Night Of The Proms; presenter Katie Derham was discussing composer Rachel Portman with Nick Mohammed, "She's got a nack, Nick" .
That's a new one on me. I'm sure she's got a niick nack, bot we shouldn't be talking about that on Sunday at the BBC.
