The probe’s dragnet has spanned a number of cases related to ongoing violence in the GTA’s long-fraught towing industry, said a government official with knowledge of a wider investigation into GTA guns-for-hire, whom the Star agreed not to name because they are not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Over recent years, the GTA saw a significant spike in violence related to the towing industry, including shootings, extortions, arson and at least two homicides. In 2024, Toronto police linked 63 firearm discharges to the sector, accounting for almost 13 per cent of shootings in the city that year.
