Did iOS 26 break geolocation for PWAs?

I am the developer of the Progressive Web App (PWA) FindMeSAR which displays the user’s coordinates in several different formats. https://findmesar.com

When this PWA is *not* installed on my iPhone then I can use Safari to open this webpage and give permission for it to use my location. FindMeSAR works fine and displays my coordinates as latitude longitude in decimal degrees.

I can also use Safari to open Google maps and geolocation there also works fine.

So iOS 26 did *not* break geolocation when using webpages online.

But if I *install* FindMeSAR for use offline as a PWA then I get an error message saying location is denied.

I am using an iPhone 17 Pro with iOS 26.0.1

I should add that I recently traded in an iPhone 13 Pro with iOS 17. FindMeSAR worked fine on that device as a PWA including the geolocation feature.

Has anyone else with iOS 26 tried a PWA that does geolocation? Results?

FindMeSAR is open source with no ads, no tracking, but it is not on GitHub. You can view the source code with a laptop/desktop and browser dev tools.

I would be grateful if someone with iOS 26 would install FindMeSAR as a PWA. Then put your phone in airplane mode, open FindMeSAR by tapping the screen icon and try geolocation by tapping Menu > My location.

Tip to save your life.

If you ever need to call for help in an emergency (police/fire/rescue/etc) you need to give your location. What if you are not at a street address or you do not know the address?

GPS chips in phones all basically work the same way. They produce (1) your latitude longitude coordinates in decimal degrees and (2) an accuracy value in meters.

Caution! When you first turn location services ‘on’ the accuracy value could easily be over 5,000 meters.

Caution! Some software (looking at you Google maps) only displays coordinates and does not display the equally important accuracy value.

https://findmesar.com is an open source #ProgressiveWebApp (PWA) I developed that displays your coordinates and accuracy value in several formats. It can be installed on Android and iOS for offline use. **Not available in any app store, not on GitHub and 100% enshitification free.**

To give it a try, open FindMeSAR, scroll down and tap ‘No’ and then give permission to use your location. Now tap ‘Next format’ to scroll through the various formats.

For instructions on how to install it for offline use, tap ‘Tips’.

Other buttons let you copy the data to the clipboard and, if your device is online, open the GISsurfer web map with a marker at your location. I am the GISsurfer dev and you can read more about it at https://gissurfer.com.

Can a #PWA be considered #selfhosted?

I am working on a chat app with a unique difference. It's a #progressivewebapp with no fixed backend.

I am able to do thing like store data, #encrypt/#decrypt #data, access #network, camera etc.

I would like it that when somone goes to the website, the app running in the #browser, can be considered "selfhosted". You would be using your own device to run the #javascript in the browser and #storage provided by the browser is also from your #device.

As a javascript app, it will do all the encryption, data storage, etc on your browser using only the resources the browser will provide. I believe the functionality as a result is substancially independent and selfhosted.

the app is cached for running offline and is essentialy a static bundle that can work by running index.html without a static server.

I think there is a reasonable case for this to be considered selfhosted. Unless the definition of selfhosted is strictly "cumbersome to setup". What are your thoughts?

Cell phone tips for #disasters.

1. It calling does not work then try sending a plain text - no pics - just text. Plain text requires less bandwidth on the cell tower.

2. If you are in a group and people use different carriers, try a phone for each carrier.

3. To share your location send latitude longitude in decimal degrees *and* the accuracy value.

@memoriesin8bit I've come around to liking Progressive Web Apps, they give me the choice of what browser I want to use but still give the convenience of "it looks like an app from my homescreen." App store apps that just wrap a web view are the worst.

@scottjenson Starbucks.com is also a PWA. But frustratingly it has no "Install App" or "Add to Home Screen" button either.

In this screenshot I've got the fly-out menu open. Most folks (including me) will never notice this.

I *still* think there needs to be an OS-level way to see which of the #apps I have installed are #PWAs and which were installed from an #app #store like #Fdroid #PlayStore #MicrosoftStore or the #AAPL #AppStore.

#NativeApps are different from #ProgressiveWebApps and #foss apps are different from the #adware that corpo app stores peddle.

I need to manage these different kinds of apps differently.
