If you look at the #procmail scoring worked back then, today anti-spam systems like Rspamd work pretty much on the same principle

uhh #Procmail ist ja echt kryptisch. Aber hab doch hinbekommen zu fixen bei #SmartList. Das wurde wohl noch vor #SPF geschrieben. Heute ist wichtig, dass From korrekt ist und Ursprungssender lieber in Reply-To packen.

Das #Dovecot 2.4.2 Update unter #Gentoo ist auch so ein Krampf. Die neue Standardkonfiguration verlangt den User "vmail", der nicht vom Installationsskript angelegt wird. Früher™ hat das auch mit anderen Nutzern geklappt (z.B. bei #Postfix). Naja. Und die Integration mit #procmail ist jetzt auch futsch. Menooo.

Eine halbwegs hilfreiche Update-Anleitung fehlt auch. Ich hab jetzt wirklich kein komplizierte Setup, nur persönliche Mails abrufen und einsortieren, halber Vormittag dafür schon weg. 🙄

In praise of #procmail

I thought I'd check to see how #procmail is doing after all this time.

It seems it's sort-of alive, via:

But even that project seems abandoned or inactive -- looking at the PRs which are there, they look good, but no-one is merging them.

I used to really like procmail -- you can also use it for more than sorting email as well.

It's also a shame that https://procmail.org just returns an empty JSON fragment `{}`.

I hope someone picks this up -- I would, but I think I might spread myself thin if I were to.

But I'm happy to, if no-one is will be...

alle emails die nicht an eine addresse in der domain gehen direkt in den spam ordner

* ! ^TO_*@domain.tld
$HOME/Maildir/.spam/

(ich bin allerdings nicht sicher ob man asterisk benötigt, ich habs einfach mal drin, doppelt gemoppelt und so)

edit: TO_ ist ein magic word und beinhaltet to, cc und bcc

der zielordner muss gegebenenfalls auf das eigene setup angepasst werden

#procmail fun fact! TO_ is a neat macro that can replace a lot of regex.

Instead of:

* ^To:.*[email protected]

I can just have:

* ^[email protected]

And that'll match To, CC, and all the things that would make me a recipient of the email.

The approximately four generations deprecated VM that handles my email is finally being killed off by my ISP, and I can't really say that I blame them. I have about a month to find a new email provider for #SMTP and #IMAP. No, I'm not going to host it myself again. Suggestions? So far #Fastmail looks like it's not complete and utter dogshit although obviously it will never be as capable as my tangled mess of custom #exim and #procmail.

Да кто ж его знает, но найти его с чатом стало проще, чем просто копаться на stackoverflow. Про это и статья... Ну и помимо этого под катом работающий скрипт, который слушает почту по IMAP и пересылает письма с вложениями и русским языком на API endpoint.

Сбор и сортировка вложений писем с помощью Fetchmail + Procmail + uudeview

На работе поступила задача от коллеги о необходимости решения вопроса с сохранением вложений в письма (поступают на определенный почтовый адрес) и сохранением их на файловом сервере. В теме письма указана аббревиатура, которую необходимо указать в имени директории, куда будет сохраняться вложения. В интернете я нашел несколько статей, с использованием данных инструментов, но по большей части они мне не давали сделать то, что было задумано и пришлось дописать небольшой скрипт, который позволил нам сохранять файлы на сетевой шаре.

@enthusiast101 unsubbing usually means (these days) that I don't have to bother writing a custom filter. Of course, in the bad old days unsubbing was just confirmation to the spammer that his mail was getting through and would attract *more* of the bloody stuff. And there's only so many times I can be arsed to write a variation on the theme of:

Don’t run away.. hear me out. Think about how good #iTunes is with organizing music files. The files are still in a filesystem but iTunes manages them. The directory structure is a product of the #ID3 metadata standard & they are kept in sync. If a track is in the genre “techno” & you decide it’s more accurately described as “electronica/trance/psychedelic”, you refine the genre in the iTunes db, which the updates the ID3 tag & moves the file from e.g. ~/music/techno to ~/music/electronica/trance/psychedelic. When you are outside iTunes, the directory structure is sensible & intuitive. When you are inside iTunes, you can search, filter, & organize based on metadata.

So you asked about PDFs as an example. I ditched iTunes (& mac & windows entirely) at one point, but at least back in the day you could (ab)use ID3 tags for PDFs since they don’t break the PDF for whatever reason. Some people then used iTunes to organize their PDFs (likely books) in that way.

So I’m not saying install iTunes.. it may not even work these days.. no idea. But the point is iTunes sets a good example of how media can be well organized.

I’ve not used #calibre in a while but perhaps it has improved. Might be worth a look.

I did my own hack. I use exiftool to set the metadata using the standard PDF fields. Then I wrote a #procmail script that created an email header from the PDF metadata and then used the procmail language to put the file through a series of conditionals & scoring & ultimately drop the file in a well-organized location. It’s a use procmail was not intended for yet strangely useful for objects that have nothing to do with email. I got side-tracked and didn’t finish the project but that’s just to give an idea of what’s possible.

Today I still manually maintain a directory structure, my metadata is a mess, and whenever I move or rename a file references to that file from apps like gnucash end up inconsistent. So I still need to get my shit together.

I've been procrastinating for *years* about migrating my mail server to new hardware. Well, today I crossed one of the tasks off my to-do list. I didn't actually do it, I just no longer care about the bidirectional #email ↔ #usenet gateway I wrote so that I could read Usenet in #mutt. It was a tangled mess of #exim config, #procmail and #perl that worked brilliantly for almost 20 years, but today I just deleted it and all its config.

@shahaan @darnell Another approach would be to have #procmail encrypt all inbound msgs before delivery, and to the MUA all msgs would be PGP msgs. Or that could be done by a mail forwarding service. AFAIK, there is only one mail forwarding service that does that: #anonaddy.com. You give anonaddy.com your PGP, and it will encrypt everything that it sends to you.

@kytta Ideally, files should have metadata & there should be a tool that enforces consistency between the metadata and the file structure. My personal free-world hack is to use #procmail for this, surprisingly enough. A script can pkg any file as an email and create faux email headers from the metadata, and then a procmail script serves to direct where the file goes.
