Does anyone NOT realize this is how things end up privatized? I mean, heck, in Texas we privatize things promising they'll cost less. Then when they end up actually costing more (surprise, right?) it doesn't matter, because it's private now, and you have no choice but to use it, because it has taken over a public function that was eliminated.

A right-wing coalition that's been laying the policy groundwork for another Trump presidency has developed a plan to further #privatize #Medicare by making
👉fraud-riddled Medicare Advantage "the default enrollment option" for newly eligible beneficiaries.The plan, highlighted Monday by Rolling Stone's Andrew Perez, is outlined about halfway through #Project2025's 920-page playbook for the first six months of a conservative presidency
Republican administrations and right-wing groups have long advocated funneling people who are newly eligible for Medicare into #Medicare #Advantage plans, which are funded by the federal government and run by for-profit insurers.
. As Perez noted, "Last year, for the first time ever, a majority of Americans eligible for Medicare were on #privatized Medicare Advantage plans."
"If Republicans win the presidential race this year," he wrote, "the push to fully privatize Medicare, the government health insurance program for seniors and people with disabilities, will only intensify."
Every year, new and existing Medicare recipients have an opportunity to enroll in Medicare Advantage plans, which engage in aggressive and often highly deceptive advertising practices to lure seniors who are often seeking out benefits not currently offered by traditional Medicare, such as vision and dental care.

Why We’re Suing to Protect the Right of Incarcerated People to Receive Physical Mail | Electronic Frontier Foundation
In 2021, San Mateo County, California, #banned people incarcerated in county jails from #receiving #physical #mail.
Instead, family and friends were required to mail their letters to Smart Communications, a private for-profit company based in Florida that would scan and destroy those letters so that incarcerated people would be required to access them digitally through a limited number of shared tablets and kiosks in public spaces within the jails.
This is why the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, and the Social Justice Legal Foundation filed a complaint last week challenging this unconstitutional policy.
The policy invades the privacy of the 850 people incarcerated in the #Redwood #City #jail, as well as that of their families.
With only a few tablets to go around, this procedure is also a cruel way of #limiting #access to communications from family and friends by drastically reducing the ability of a person to spend time reading them.
It’s also hard to overstate exactly how important written correspondences are to people inside jails and prisons in the U.S. — a true lifeline to the world outside.
This lawsuit also marks #EFF’s commitment to stopping the current trend that seeks to #privatize aspects of the carceral system #for #profit as well as strip #privacy away from incarcerated individuals.
Another such practice is charging exorbitant #fees for people to make #phone #calls to family members—a scheme that #Connecticut has just made illegal.
