An editorial opinion piece in the Saturday Paper today,
*Baronial Mindset*, links recent charges of fairly rapey attitudes to females, to the mindset encouraged by certain private schools. There is no point in me copying the sordid details here; you are either aware of the worst attitudes to “non-males”, or you are living in a bubble.
The editorial says, in part “Children are sent to these schools to confirm their advantage. It is a system unlike any other in the world, where the government pays for the rich to build a special network of people like them, almost from birth.”
The problem, it suggests, is not just that this notion of privilege exists and is perpetuated in these schools, but that the government subsidises them.
It might be useful to address each of these points separately, rather than conflate rapey attitudes with government funding of private schools.
The notion of *class* privilege is real. Western culture might easily be summarised as “Wankers gonna wank”. Always has been the culture, and doesn’t look like changing any time soon. This has been the way of the west long before there were even government budgets. Sure, I don’t like the idea of subsidising it, but government funding is hardly the cause.
We currently have the most ideologically clueless government since… since… well, the last one. Albo has been sprouting vacuous, token wokisms since forever, and it has always been patently obvious that he doesn’t *get* what he is saying any more than his speechwriters.
What was disappointing (not surprising) about his recent on air discussions of Kylie is that he doesn’t get what is *off* about it. It reeks of some insecure kid standing in a jerk circle trying to look like he belongs.
For the sake of balance, let’s not forget the former self-appointed minister for women talking about women “doing the ironing”. Can we link this level of *je-ne-sais-quoi* to his Rhodes Scholarship, or is it just the culture Australia is steeped in?Rapiness is not unique to public schools. We live in a country where women are routinely murdered, or raped, and only the oligarch media make anything of it. If the women murdered/raped are not a) citizens or b) white, the oligarch media does not even pretend to be outraged but act instead as if it did not happen at all.
The notion of *class* privilege is real; the notion of *caste* as applied to women is also real, but something completely separate.
Every child in this country should get a reasonable level of education, regardless of their lineage, and I do not fear/loathe government enough to suggest the government should contribute nothing.
The problem is not that private schools are funded at all; the problem is that they are not funded on the basis of need. But this is not the cause of our rapey culture. Men and women who subscribe to sexist bullshit are the cause.

CW: Science teachers from Queensland Open Brethren schools told to teach students about vegetarian dinosaurs on Noah’s Ark.~The Guardian
This is 3 months old but I missed it.
“Teachers employed by a large group of Queensland Christian schools were told to teach creationism in science classes, including that vegetarian baby dinosaurs would have been taken aboard Noah’s Ark.”Hilarious but also terrifying.
“The conference featured a presentation by the Answers in Genesis’ director of research, Australian geologist Andrew Snelling.
“Those present say Snelling told them the radiometric dating techniques used by mainstream scientists to show fossils and rocks are millions of years old were flawed. He said the Himalayas were formed by the “great flood”, and that juvenile vegetarian dinosaurs had been on the ark.

Shocking new data: Australia is the MOST EXPENSIVE country in the developed world to send a kid to high school!
Families pay an average of $4,967 per year per child – almost 4× the OECD average of ~$1,262.
Why? Over 40% of high schoolers go private (2nd highest in OECD, only behind Chile), and fees average >$11k/year, reaching up to $55k at elite schools.
Public schools are cheap (or free), but the massive private sector drags the national average sky-high.
This didn't happen by accident. The privatisation push started under the Howard government: scrapping the New Schools Policy (allowing easy new private schools in existing areas) + generous funding changes that boosted private enrolments and let fees soar.
Result? A two-tier system where wealthy schools get huge public subsidies + high fees, while public schools face funding shortfalls and many families get squeezed.
We need radical reform – not more taxpayer cash to schools that don't need it.#Australia #Education #PrivateSchools #PublicEducation #CostOfLiving #HowardGovernment #SchoolFunding #Inequality #OECD #Sydney #NSW

Her concluding para states the bleading obvious that somehow gets missed by our polies:
“This problem was not caused by public schools. It was caused by ideologically driven governments, snobbery, greedy churches, anxious parents and a pusillanimous bureaucracy. There are solutions. They could be implemented. Other countries have managed it perfectly well. All we need is a leader with some guts.”
