Specifically, Private Fishing and Private Property.

  2. The reason I think #MatriarchalCommunism is the next (or first!?) truly civilized "phase" (if we survive this) is because the rise of primative #accumulation and #capitalism, including the #enclosures of #public #land transfomed into #private, the development of #wage #labor following the #crisis of european “need” for expanding #markets and labor, and the witch trials and murders (10s of thousands of basic #sisters, daughters, and #grandmothers) created or deepened (while adding 100% incrs of intensity of #misogyny) the line between men/male and women/female (less than), while hitherto, communities included #identities and #labor performed independently or in #untraditional #families.
Previous to “Oh shit the world is round!” the #complementary #division of labor for #families in the structure meant women's #work was valued, #compensated with #trade and #respect. #Euro-Colonialist states and the church’s (both #Protestant and #Catholic) #insatiable #desire for #freelabor and #profit purposefully created #genders #races and #childabuse. Before, there were territories and natural boundaries. after the violent and terrifying rise of #privateproperty in #Europe they demanded heirarchies binaries to separate who profits from who labors and who slaves

  4. Whose property do the communists want to destroy?

"You are horrified at our intending to do away with private property. But in your existing society, private property is already done away with for nine-tenths of the population; its existence for the few is solely due to its non-existence in the hands of those nine-tenths. You reproach us, therefore, with intending to do away with a form of property, the necessary condition for whose existence is the non-existence of any property for the immense majority of society."

Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, “The Communist Manifesto.” 1847.

  5. Perhaps property is where an end to the corporate and people divide can be agreed on? The relation of investors to people has become so extreme; accelerating inequality and injustice that a cap on fascist growth must be called for before violent revolutions and or civil wars takes place! #CorporateProperty #PrivateProperty #Lettings #Renters #FairDeal #JusticeForEpsteinVictims #Revolutions #CivilWars npr.org/2026/01/20/nx-s1-56752

  6. Simon Fairlie on Enclosure

'the common ownership of land, and the history of its enclosure, provides a template for understanding the enclosure of other common resources, ranging from the atmosphere and the oceans to pollution sinks and intellectual property. The physical fences and hedges that staked out the privateownership of the fields of England, are shadowed by the metaphorical fences that now delineate more sophisticated forms of private property'

  7. The Quw’utsun (Cowichan) First Nation was exactly right in 2017:

""We don’t want to argue about settlers' interests versus First Nations' interests — we want to argue about what the Crown did wrong.””

They knew that if the case was framed as ‘taking over private property rights’, that it would be politicized and a lightning rod for racism and misinformation when that was not the point of their claim, which was against the Crown.

""It would be wrong. It’s wrong morally, it’s wrong legally. It’s pitting interests against each other when the person who caused the problem is the Crown.””

Another excellent report from CBC's Jason Proctor.

  8. @DecaturNature The shopping mall angle led to some legal decisions ~1980s, possibly before. I don't know if there's been any subsequent online equivalent. I can't point at anything specific (though I may be able to turn something up on request). But that's where I'd start looking.

Pruneyard v. Robbins is the canonical case: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pruneyar (SCOTUS, 1980), finding for the plaintiffs that a free-speech right did exist.

This is probably the remit of the EFF / ACLU / EPIC and similar organisations.

For the record I've long had an issue with the notion that free speech rights are only a matter of direct government action. There are a few reasons for this:

    • The right to exclude speech from private property ultimately relies on government sanction for that exclusion.
    • Spatial monopolies, whether of commercial, educational, recreational, or even residential spaces, trade private control (and powers and limitations) for public ones, whether or not those private concerns are for-profit or not-for-profit. E.g., what are the free-speech rights on a private school or university, or a religious institution, or a park, or a residential complex?
    • Common carrier provisions were enacted in transportation, and later communications systems, specifically because those systems, though privately held, exercised so much power over commerce, travel, and communication. The idea that free speech is absolutely limited to government interactions in that context strikes me as ludicrous.

  9. “Hey! Hey!” he said again. “Can I help you? Hey! Can I help you?”
He was shouting from up by the barn.
“No,” I said. “I’m trying to get a picture of your dandelions. They caught my eye as I was driving by.”
He was quiet for a moment. “Oh.” Then, “I thought you were looking for the swimming hole. A lot of people are looking for the swinging hole.”
I never saw him. Just heard him yelling. Not unfriendly. But it reminded me of the “mushroom wars,” when farmers would attack strangers in their fields. Because they were trespassing, damaging fences, leaving hazardous (to cattle and machinery) garbage. Because they were long-haired strangers picking “magic mushrooms” in their fields.
That was a long time ago. Still, having a farmer yelling at me, it got my back up.

  14. "#Neoliberals had always been concerned with the extra-economic conditions for capitalism’s survival, but they had usually focused on law, religion, and morality. The growing influence of Friedrich #Hayek’s ideas of cultural evolution and the mainstream popularity of neuroscience and evolutionary psychology led many to turn to the harder sciences. Changing demographics—an aging white population matched by an expanding nonwhite population—made some right-wing neoliberals and libertarians rethink the conditions necessary for #capitalism. Perhaps some cultures, and even some races, might be predisposed to market success while others were not? Perhaps #culturalhomogeneity was a precondition for social stability, and thus the peaceful conduct of market exchange and enjoyment of #privateproperty?"

  15. Just curious: What do you consider the first #capitalist society?

Generally, folks seem to think of the 19th century. Roughly when #Industrialisation moved the power to exploit people from "power by noble birth" (#Feudalism) to "power by capital ownership" (#Capitalism) on a large scale. With a lot of overlap, of course.

Yet some Marxists as well as "Capitalism= #PrivateProperty" folks argue an earlier beginning of capitalism.
