  3. Honey West, the original tough cookie action heroine. Dig a Dead Doll, from 1960, was the seventh Honey West novel. This time there's murder in the bullring in Mexico. As usual Honey loses her clothes. Hardboiled, violent, sleazy, stylish, fun.

  4. Three On a Ticket (1947), the fourth of PRC's Mike Shayne PI B-movies. A guy walks into Shayne's office and drops dead. He was a PI as well, but an unsavoury one. Then a blonde wants to hire Shayne to kill her husband. A good solid B-picture.

  5. Marlowe (1969), a surprisingly good adaptation of Raymond Chandler's The Little Sister scripted by Stirling Silliphant, with James Garner making an effective Philip Marlowe. Marlowe encounters hippies and lots of late 60s California decadence.

  6. A Gun for Honey was published 1958. Busty hardboiled girl PI Honey West (who packs a rod and never wears a bra) is after a psycho who kisses girls to death. The mystery plot is solid. Sleazy, perverse, trashy, amusing, entertaining, delightful.

  7. The Savage Salome is a 1961 Carter Brown thriller featuring hip PI Danny Boyd. Danny is hired by an opera singer to find her dog's murderer. He finds a lot more than that. If you love trashy sleazy hardboiled PI thrillers you'll love this one.

  8. The sunny, warm afternoon here on deck is providing the sort of … ambiance for friggen guitar jams. Like this one from Tommy Bolin.

  9. 'Mrs Sherlock Holmes’ and the other real #FemaleSleuths who were written out of history

An opera diva, a queen of surveillance and Selfridges’ ‘secret service’ head were among the women who rivalled male #PrivateEyes and whose stories are told in a new book

  10. Johnny Staccato (1959) a stylish gritty jazz-fuelled film noir-inflected PI TV series with John Cassavetes as a piano player/private eye. Similar to Peter Gunn but better - more neurotic, edgy and noirish.

  11. The 1978 The Big Sleep with Mitchum is nowhere near as bad as it's made out to be. It has its problems but it's highly entertaining. Most people hate the 70s setting but Marlowe could quite plausibly have been still working as a PI in 1978.

  12. Farewell, My Lovely (1975) gave Robert Mitchum at 57 his first chance to play Philip Marlowe. He does a superb job as an ageing worldweary Marlowe. Charlotte Rampling is great in female fatale mode. One of the great neo-noirs.

  13. Another great guitarist gone way too soon at the age of 25 and to a drug overdose after a show in which he opened as a solo artist for Jeff Beck. I was introduced to this tune in 1984 by the program director at the first radio station I worked at. It kicks ass. The neighbors, I’m sure, appreciate it. 😉

  14. Mickey Spillane’s 1964 novel The Snake is a sequel to The Girl Hunters and you absolutely must read The Girl Hunters first. This is a very different Mike Hammer - older, wiser and sadder. Both books are great, but read the earlier books first.

  15. The Girl With No Place To Hide (1959), a Marvin H. Albert Jake Barrow PI thriller written under the name Nick Quarry. Rescuing a girl leads Jake into the worlds of high fashion and photography and high-stakes gambling.

    Good noirish stuff.

  19. Time To Prey, an enjoyable 1960 entry in Frank Kane’s long-running Johnny Liddell PI thriller series. A pretty girl passes a letter to Johnny and then gets murdered.

Johnny Liddell is a Mike Hammer clone, but more cold-blooded and less ethical. But Kane is just not in Spillane's league as a writer.
