🥬 The Diarrhea Lettuce Company Has Been Linked to Forced Labor
Taylor Farms, the produce giant behind the current cyclospora outbreak and last year's deadly E. coli romaine recall, has been contracting prison labor from Arizona at $4.75/hour. The incarcerated workers themselves take home max $1.50/hour. A 2023 Prison Legal News report resurfaced this week connecting the dots.

The #US has arguably the strongest restrictions on forced labor imports of any country. It has prohibited the importation of goods made with #SlaveLabor for nearly a century, though it still allows #PrisonLabor under conditions that labor organizations consider coercive. In 2021, under Biden, the US passed a #law banning imports from a region of China where it had found forced labor to be rampant.

"Prisoners in Minnesota are earning less than a dollar an hour making products for Disney. That’s according to organizers and former inmates who gathered at a press conference in December to share what they’ve learned — or experienced firsthand — about the exploitative prison labor system in Minnesota.
Organizers with the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee called the press conference last month to update the public about their campaign to end what they call prison slavery.
The Minnesota constitution allows for exactly that – slavery as part of a punishment for a crime. Under article one, section two of the state’s constitution, involuntary servitude is barred unless someone has been convicted of a crime. Under the statute, prisoners can be subjected to unpaid and grossly underpaid work.
Through a subcontractor, Anagram International LLC, Disney has taken advantage of this law to extract nearly-free labor from the state’s inmates, paying them $0.90 an hour to fold large Mylar balloons, according to organizers of the event and two inmates who shared their firsthand experience."

CA Relies on Incarcerated Firefighters. They Finally Make Federal Minimum Wage.
California relies heavily on incarcerated firefighters to protect life and property, but pays them a pittance. Recently, a major grassroots and legislative push to improve working conditions for incarcerated firefighters enjoyed some success. On October 13, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 247 into law, raising their base pay and doubling the amount by which they can reduce their sentences.

American prisons run on forced labor. For @bolts, historian Robert Chase answered reader questions about the legal basis for paying incarcerated people below minimum wage, whether the Americans with Disabilities Act applies in these circumstances, who has the authority to stop prison labor, and more.

Modern day slavery. Undercutting the labor market with workers who are given no other choice, and where their earnings are largely gobbled up by the state. And being a hard worker means you will be denied parole.
Alabama has earned hundreds of millions of dollars from prison labor since 2000.

yup
the way the #GOP will "solve" the #immigration "problem" is it will imprison immigrants, then use them as free #prisonlabor
#MAGA morons think people will be sent back to their home countries
nope
1. establishing what country they are from isn't easy,
2. those countries won't accept them,
3. moving them is a huge costinstead #Republicans will set up a scheme to rob people of their #labor:
imprison immigrants and work them for free rather than paying them

#Prisonlabor is legal in the United States due to a loophole in the #13thAmendment of the U.S. Constitution, which banned #slavery, except for people convicted of crimes.

Prison Jobs: Working Hard, Hardly Paid
"So when you go back to society, you have a disadvantage in the things that are available to you, but yet you're spending all these years in prison using your labor, and that labor is not being used to help prepare you for the society you're going back to."

The US economy demands labor, but refuses to pay for it at market prices. The solution? Slavery.
And you wonder why there's such a push for long mandatory minimum sentences and other "tough on crime" policies -- it's to provide slave workers

#AI #DataLabor #PrisonLabor #Finland #Clickworkers: "Around the world, millions of so-called “clickworkers” train artificial intelligence models, teaching machines the difference between pedestrians and palm trees, or what combination of words describe violence or sexual abuse. Usually these workers are stationed in the global south, where wages are cheap. OpenAI, for example, uses an outsourcing firm that employs clickworkers in Kenya, Uganda, and India. That arrangement works for American companies, operating in the world’s most widely spoken language, English. But there are not a lot of people in the global south who speak Finnish.
That’s why Metroc turned to prison labor. The company gets cheap, Finnish-speaking workers, while the prison system can offer inmates employment that, it says, prepares them for the digital world of work after their release. Using prisoners to train AI creates uneasy parallels with the kind of low-paid and sometimes exploitive labor that has often existed downstream in technology. But in Finland, the project has received widespread support."
