  1. Molly Crabapple on the Jewish Bund

'When I wrote my book about the Bund, I made sure to focus on the women. Some were barricade fighters and orators. Some shot guns, wrote theoretical treatises, and pulled their friends off of boxcars bound for Treblinka...I tried to pay attention to the humbler work of life. The women’s vigils alongside Mokotow prison. The women on the bus to Rikers. The aunties who pack the packages. The hands that keep movements alive'

  3. I was excited to realise yesterday that not only is there a second season of Andor starting next month, but I only watched the first half of Season 1. Onto episode 8 tonight.

The prison complexes on the ocean planet immediately reminded me of the floating super-prison in the MCU. Then I had a dark thought. What if this is the endgame of SeaSteading technology? The ultimate Guantanamo ...

  7. @danie10 @hcj Australia's new law effectively means #teens will not be able to research topics that may OR MAY NOT BE affecting their society, as they move into #adulthood, this effectively reduces under-16s in #australia (and if this global trend continues, the world) as second class citizens, 2nd class youth will invariably lead to 2nd class adults. Information is NOT #alcohol, its NOT an addictive drug, it is the bigtech platforms that have weaponized the social spaces.... social spaces in general are NOT THE PROBLEM!

the australian govt comparing this law to an #alcoholBan ought horrify every living person on earth. we should be reminded also of what the "war on drugs" actually achieved, in so far as it simply put a bunch of recreational users into the #prisonIndustrialComplex. I put forward that THIS is the real goal of this new global push by govts to ban #information for our youth.

It is also akin to the burning of books, because when govt (today in the 'land-down-under') ties access to the internet to getting a #facescan, or a govt-issued #digitalID that will spell the end of #academicFreedom. The so-called #freeAndOpenWeb and #fediverse community must move swiftly to make australia's new laws redundant.

    Mobilise now....

....we ONLY have 12 months make i2p federation a native feature of :butterfedyC: fediverse servers.

  9. "I have found that state legislatures controlled by Democrats from 1984 to 2004 were more likely to build prisons. A common dynamic when a prison is being built is that Republican-led legislatures afterward pass stricter laws ensuring there will be more incarcerated persons."

"the supply of prisons generates demand that states grow the population of incarcerated persons. In fact, our working paper suggests that prison demand is not only inelastic but drives incarceration, not the other way around. States that build more prisons incarcerate more people."

  10. #Slavery was never abolished in the #US, it was only modified, as explicitly defined in the #13thAmendment.

    The #PrisonIndustrialComplex is literally #SlaveryByAnotherName.

Where are the international sanctions on the #UnitedStates?

And people are still confused as to how we can be allies with brutally repressive, and #authoritarian regimes. Like attracts like.

  14. @Dale standard #overcharging in the US criminal justice system, unfortunately. Throw every possible charge at them and see what sticks / use the prospect of the penalties to negotiate down to a lower charge for the plea.

  16. WTF?!?

"The Cell Buster, made by American company Sabre and marketed under the tagline Making Grown Men Cry Since 1975, involves hosing pepper spray into a closed cell to incapacitate the inmate.

It was used multiple times against Mihi Bassett and Karma Cripps at Auckland Women's Prison in 2019 in what the District Court earlier ruled was cruel and degrading treatment designed to break their spirit."
