  1. 2/2 That framing—"Print ads now come with English subtitles. (Within brackets)"—was originally by Karthik Venkataraman, in his LinkedIn post for the second ad.

  2. 2/2 The one surprising omission was the Chandigarh edition - it simply had the same backdrop as the New Delhi edition! Even Pune has a local landmark in the background instead of just passing of Mumbai's design, as is usually the case with such localization efforts.

  3. Quite an unusual pitch for a hospital - "Jitna zaroori, utna hi karenge" (We will do only what is necessary) in these days of people being sceptical of hospitals asking them to this and that test and a lot more! I don't think I have seen this pitch being used in an ad for a hospital before.

  4. 4/4 But again, the one problem I have faced in these expansive range ads from Amul is around availability. Some of the variants that I crave for after seeing such ads are not available near home in departmental stores or even via quick commerce apps.

  5. 2/2 Does it make you, a reader of The Times of India, feel like you are one among 1.2 crore readers? Even if so, it presumes that you already own the Jaquar shower enclosure and you are singing to them, the 1.2 crore readers of The Times of India.

What connection do the readers of any newspaper have to do with you singing in the shower?

It's clear that the brand and the agency were trying something clever here, but it completely eludes me.

  6. LOL! Well played, Centrick... though I have a feeling that only one copy of Manifest was published with this back page, as a special edition 🙂

  7. Quite a coincidence that two phone ads on two consecutive days (yesterday and today) use the first two pages of newspapers for ads that use variants of the counterintuitive 'This is not for you' headline (Xiaomi - 'Why you don't need it', and Nothing - 'Don't buy me').

Both phones go for sale on the same day too - March 11th (though on rival ecommerce platforms - Amazon vs. Flipkart).

  8. A simple, but truly arresting print ad, in today's Economic Times - perfect sync between the prominent visual and the headline, in service of the product pitch.

Good pitch too for the product as a destination for company offsites and conferences, in terms of the choice of media. I'm glad the copy didn't try to oversell the headline's premise by riffing on 'king of the jungle', 'leadership', etc. and left it with just a directional opening line.

  9. Client to agency: "You had already proclaimed the Thar ROXX as 'THE' SUV. What do we now do for the new awards ad?"

Agency: "We are already half-way home to stare at our spouses. So, we'll go with something simple and easy".

Result: 'THE' SUV IS THE SUV 🤭

  10. Besides the suspiciously close/similar number between the 2 top tippers, what caught my eye was the consistent use of 'they' and 'them', despite knowing fully well that this may be derisively seen as 'woke' as per present-day, majoritarian sensibilities.

  11. 2/2 Plus, they have spread three variants across three (four, including Delhi) cities - Tata Coffee Grand Classic for Chennai, Tata Coffee Gold for Bengaluru, and Tata Coffee Grand Premium for Mumbai (and Delhi).

The Chennai effort is even more extensive - a full-fledged song by composer Santhosh Narayanan, along with a and music video featuring singer Dhee!

    Well played, Tata Coffee!

  12. Aren't these Google search-style autocomplete prompts supposedly out of fashion now? 😁

Isn't ChatGPT-styled generative AI with detailed questions (called 'prompts') and detailed answers in complete sentences in vogue now? 😉

I guess generative AI would have truly 'arrived' when it is used in print advertising in India.

  13. 2/2 But this series (and the idea itself) is far, far low-key compared to CRED's earlier envelope-pushing communication that is usually high-profile either in the use of stars (albeit ones that are not currently 'hot' and are relatively 'cheaper') or media (TV-first).

I really wonder how this series is working for them - an old-world (print, classified) media to promote an in-app, digital bidding game.

  14. Who is qualified to suggest Crocin to you, a medicine? A doctor? So Crocin's ad has a white-coat doctor. But what is he called in the ad? "Mr." Sachin Khurana. Not "Dr.".

    Here's why!
